Story
The good news is that Joe Pickett has his job back. The bad news is that he's come to learn that a drone is killing wildlife - and the drone belongs to a mysterious and wealthy man whose grandson is dating Joe's own daughter, Lucy. When Joe tries to lay down the rules for the drone operator, he's asked by the FBI and the DOJ to stand down, which only makes him more suspicious. Meanwhile, bodies are piling up in and around Joe's district in shocking numbers. He begins to fear that a pack of four vicious killers working on behalf of the Sinaloa cartel known as the Wolf Pack have arrived.

Story
Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes - these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.

The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target. The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he'd always wondered if there'd be a day of reckoning.

Story
Everything about the man is a mystery: the massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man’s wealth comes from killing people. Joe Pickett, still officially a game warden but now mostly a troubleshooter for the governor, is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he’d bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe.

This was a mess, save yourself the time
We have listened to books by Mr. box previously and always found them entertaining and interesting. I don’t know what happened here. This book was a disaster from start to finish. Too many characters with no (or consistent) development, major questions raised and then abandoned, a deuce ex machina or two wherever the situation was hopeless (a functioning speargun in an abandoned mountain cabin?) Attacks by wolverines! Toward the end I wondered if we would have Alligators falling from the sky. And why were falcons in this at all?

Joe and a Tech CEO, colliding cultures
After listening to numerous other audiobooks I appreciate more and more David Chandler's narration of the Joe Pickett series. I liked the story of Joe leading a Tech CEO on an Elk hunt and you know because it's Joe things will not go as planned. Talk about 2 different lifestyles colliding! I was happy that this installment included not only Joe, but Marybeth, Nate, Sheridan, Liv, and some new characters. I liked the start of a hopefully a long running storyline of Sheridan working with Nate/Liv. I hope the next installment follows through on Nate's latest problem. My 4 start rating for the story is because I want to mention in hopes CJ or his publishers will take note that they have to do better due diligence in making sure that the integrity of the history of the characters is maintained as it's a distraction for use dedicated Joe Pickett fans when history is changed. I noticed after Windterkill they changed Nate's eye color from Green to Blue, in Long Range they made the Mad Archer a suspect for the shooting of Judge Hewitt's wife when in fact Nate had killed the Mad Archer in Force of Nature and they also changed the Mad Archer's criminal history to have him serving jail time when previously he has gotten off with only slaps on the wrist. Now in Dark Sky in giving a quick recap of Nate's background as they do for new readers that may not have read the prior novels in the series they said that Nate's current "compound" is the first time he has owned a house/property. What happened to Nate owning his prior residence the old Stone House that was where he lived in so many of the prior novels? Nothing was ever said about what happened to that property. Some of us readers notice inconsistencies like this. Also at the end of Long Range Nate said he was going to go back OFF THE GRID because of the cartel targeting him. Apparently he did not as Dark Sky has him running Yarek just as he was doing. All he did was add a trespass alarm at his front gate.

Wow
I think I say this after every Joe Pickett novel, but Wow, that’s the best yet. How, after all the novels, C.J. Box can still create such great story lines based on the same characters just proves how great of an author he is. The only bad part of it is that it had to end. Now the worst part, the year long wait for the next one.

Oof - A Swing and a Miss
I am a fan and know there can be some variance in Box’s books, but I generally enjoy them and I buy every one.
But this book is a mess. It feels like he had to write a book and so technically checked that box, but didn’t have an entire story in place and it was left as a to be continued ending.
It’s messy and disorganized and more fantastical than a Marvel movie.
I like the characters so I stuck with it and listened while I walked the dogs. But isn’t good.

I wish there were more men like Joe Picket, C.J . Box, AND David Chandler. However, I am concerned that Joe’s body will not last much longer. Additionally I wonder if Mr. Box’s other books would not be more appealing (at least to me) if they were read by David Chandler.
