Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Story
For nearly 400 years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame. All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once again.

Story
Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

Such a great story!
Loved this very much. Carissa Broadbent can do no wrong - I am convinced she is a goddess among writers. The story is fantastic. The world building is so good, although a little bit intricate. I feel like it will make more sense as the series continues. There is political intrigue and it is action packed. The romance is perfect - slow burn but in the best possible way. I am in love with both Tissanah and Max. They are equally amazing.
The narration was good but I would say I’m not a huge fan of the male voice. He’s fine, but not who I would have chosen. In fact I prefer the female narrators voice for Max over the male voice actor to be honest. He just seems too rushed and breathy?
Despite that, I cannot wait to get to book 2!

Honestly it’s worth it
The story is fantastic!! The narration in the first book is a bit too childish during dialogue, but the narrator drops the childlike voice in the second and third book!! So for those who listened to the first book and hated the narration… the second and third book are great!

Narrators were great & story surprised me!
I was nervous to spend a credit on this book because of the reviews about the male narrator and I’m super super picky about narrators. I didn’t mind him at all - he’s definitely a little gaspy, but even with my rampant misophonia this didn’t detract from the story. Female narrator was great as well.
I wish there was a little more context to draw me in, it took me about 10 chapters to really get into it, and it was at about halfway through that I was fully riveted. Definitely worth the read and the credit. Now that the world is set up I can’t wait to see how it plays out in future books. It had a unique story line that surprised me!!

Ok Story, Voice Acting Not Great
The story is ok, keeps you interested. The voice actors are not great. The female voice is good when narrating, but sounds too childish when doing main character's dialogue. The male voice actor takes sharp air gasps every sentence which are so unpleasantly distracting...

I couldn’t finish it
I might try again at a different time but once the male narrator came in I couldn’t get past how he takes a breath every 3 words. I listened to 10 hours and have about 5 hours left but I’m so distracted by his narration that I’m not gonna even try to finish this book.

Great story - breathy narrator
This is a great story if you can get through the chapters where the guy narrates. He has a good voice but you can hear him sharply inhale so often that it’s distracting. I’m wondering if there is a way to edit it out bc it’s seriously hard to listen to and takes away from the story.

awful narration
The story itself is absolutely wonderful. IMO, a 5 star book. However, the narrators really took away from the experience of it. Tisaanah's voice is portrayed as soft and meek when in the story her character is reflected as strong and having used brute force to succeed in all she does. A strong female lead. The narrator did not do her justice, but read well enough. Max's narrator, was like nails against a chalkboard. It was breathy and monotone and still managed to sound like every word was a question. There was no rhythm or emotion in his reading and made Max's POV very difficult to focus on and retain. I LOVE this book, but I highly suggest you go for a physical copy if you want to enjoy this story to the fullest.

Excellent Fantasy Romance! So excited for the next one ✨
This book tells the story of Tisaanah. After she escapes 8 years of slavery she heads to a group called The Orders in order to join them and seek help for her fellow slaves still in captivity back home. There she meets Max who becomes her reluctant teacher. Together they train as love and friendship grows between them. And as time passes, Tisaanah discovers The Orders may not be everything she wanted them to be and that war is soon to arrive.
🤍This was a surprisingly wonderful read. Tisaanah is an excellent main character. The majority of the book is from her point of view. She is strong willed(not in a bratty way like you see in many novels). She is brave, smart, and resourceful. She has to fight every step of the way to get what she wants and she never gives up.
💙Max is also great. About halfway through the book, we start hearing his point of view as well which I loved. He has a bad history with The Orders and is grumpy, snarky, and mad at the world(for good reason). Nevertheless, he sees Tisaanah’s strong will and it inspires him as even with all his tragedies he still wants to see good in the world.
❤️🔥The romance that develops between them was wonderful. It wasn’t build just on sexual attraction like many of these books tend to do(though this novel does have heat 🔥 in the romance department). The romance developed as they grew to trust, to learn each other, and to open up to one another. It was very well done and there wasn’t any stupid miscommunications or “protecting you for your own good” kinds of annoying interferences like there always tends to be.
💛As for the story. It was an excellent beginning to this series. The majority was training with some action battles closer to the end. We meet some good side characters but mainly stick with Max and Tisaanah. Additionally, we don’t get a lot of world building in this book but I was still enthralled the entire time and eager to see what would happen next. With war coming up, I’m interested to see how Tisaanah and Max will fight and keep control of their powers.
Overall, great read. Highly recommend for lovers of non-YA Fantasy Romance! 🖤

Why did the narrator make the protagonist sound like a whiny, pre-pubescent boy? All of the other characters were performed well and given (in my opinion) demeanors appropriate for their personality. But for some reason Tisaanah is portrayed in a way that grated against my ears.
I understand that there’s meant to be a language barrier, which the author accounted for by unusual syntax, but it’s almost as if the narrator decided she also needed to sound like a child. I just couldn’t get past that and ended up doing most of my reading the old-fashioned way.

The male narrator is terrible!
Such a shame because the story had me enthralled from page one! The world building and character development was absolutely amazing and I had no issues with the female narrator. However, once the male narrator began the whole book was ruined for me. He managed to make every word he read sound like one long run-on sentence. I could not tell when one thought ended or where dialogue began. My 8 year old would have read this in a more interpretive way than this professional narrator! I will be physically reading the next books.

Just listen to it - it's fantastic
Great storyline that is always moving and full of tension, with a strong female lead character a wonderfully created fantasy world and solid narration. Looking forward to the audiobook for the 2nd part of the series and hearing what Tisaanah does next.

Dan Canney ruined this book.
I could not handle his constant audible inhaling, sometimes 5+ times per sentence. If Esther was the only narrator I'd probably give it 4 stars all around. He made it such an absolute chore to finish that I absolutely won't continue this series because I can see his name attached to the other two books, which is a massive shame, because I really did enjoy it.
Dan, meanwhile, has probably become my least favorite narrator.

Great listen, slow start
This book was so good. Loved the FMC, loved the plot, the romance and that lead into book 2! It does have a bit of a slow start, I was about half way through until I was really, truly hooked but I’m so happy I kept at it! 10/10
