Publisher's Summary

The ghosts of the past come calling in a spellbinding heart stopper from the "Queen of the Northern Gothic".

After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents' home on Lake Superior to pull herself together - only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman's curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She's seen her before. In her dreams...

One hundred years ago, a love story ended in tragedy, its mysteries left unsolved. It's time for the lake to give up its secrets. As each mystery unravels, it pulls Kate deeper into the eddy of a haunting folktale that has been handed down in whispers over generations. Now, it's Kate's turn to listen.

As the drowned woman reaches out from the grave, Kate reaches back. They must come together, if only in dreams, to right the sinister wrongs of the past.

Surprisingly captivating

Don’t normally go for “ghost” like stories but this one pulled me in and I enjoyed it to the end. Decent story, great narration brought to life with sympathetic insight.

A Haunting Ghost Story of Dreams and Reality—Excel

I selected this for my First of the Month free book and was rewarded with a very well written standalone novel. It starts with a body washing up on the beach in front of Kate’s house. The body looks perfectly preserved but how? Then Kate goes down to see the body and recognized the woman from her dreams. She has been dreaming about this woman. Of course, Kate becomes a suspect for a short period of time. For no reason as far as I could tell other than she recognized the body and then knew there was a baby wrapped in the woman’s gown. How would she know that? From her dream but the sheriff wasn’t a fan of the supernatural. Anyway, Kate takes a short vacation to get away from her impending divorce by going to a nearby resort town to stay in her cousin’s (great grandparent’s gothic mansion from the early 1900’s) where she encounters a malevolent ghost. Yes, you must suspend your here and now views and let the story unfold through Kate’s dreams until finally all is revealed. This is not a spooky story where you are sitting on the edge of your seat with your heart beating miles an hour but is a rather slow story where you find out about the people involved, past and present. You might anticipate the ending but you won’t guess what happens. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and listened to much of it on audible with Xe Sands narrating. She is an excellent narrator and made the story even better because of her characters. I will be reading this author again.

Wendy Webb has done it again!

Wendy Webb is one of my favorite authors and she has delivered another home run! Good, old fashion, spooky ghost story. No smut, profanity or vulgarity and Xe Sands gives an impeccable performance as always. Thank you!

Haunting tale of love & despair

A beautifully haunting tale of love that encompasses the past & follows the future. A love so strong that old wrongs can be set straight. I usually try to stretch my audiobooks out to last a few days but I couldn't not continue to listen. A tragic tale with many unexpected twists & turns but in the end, love remains.

GREAT story!

This is the first book I've read/listened to by Wendy Webb. I will definitely be purchasing more from this author. It was a captivating story from the very beginning. I really enjoyed the twisting plot with a creepy ghostly element all the way through. Different from anything I've read before and it was refreshingly new. I would definitely recommend it!

Oy! Better read this one on your own!

Oh my. The story is an interesting one. The reading, however, makes me want to tear my hair out. I had to stop and just download the book and finish it myself. Ms. Sands is reading in the most affected, bored, positively uninterested and apathetic tone. She drags out the last word of every sentence and then adds a little lift. I think she's trying to sound relaxed, cool and sexy but she misses it BY A STINKIN' MILE!! The intonation she uses to represent the male characters makes them sound like they are just about to fall asleep. I can't take it. I just can't take it. You can just picture her with one leg slung over the arm of an overstuffed chair, cigar hanging out the side of her mouth, book lazily hanging off of her fingers as she reads. Ugh. I have never left a poor review before, but you are much better off reading this one in book form. (Sorry, Ms. Sands, you have a nice voice. Please, please stop with whatever weird thing you did with it when you read this book. You ruined it.)

The Female's Voices Get Annoying

It's a good story but the narrator gives the females some really weak voices. The females sound like they're out of it or just very weak. One minor thing that also got kind of annoying was that each of the two main female characters had a "vision" of their happily ever after when they met their love interest. It was something like "she saw scenes of her life with this man and knew they would be together forever" upon first laying eyes on the guy!

However, there were also plenty of things I did like, including the murder mystery and hearing that unfold and also seeing the main character in the present times kind of starting over after her husband cheated on her. But I wasn't a big fan that one second later she was crazy about the detective. Maybe that's just me though.

The family trees can be a little hard to follow but I listened to while driving and even though I had to rewind a few times, I got the gist and the story so don't sweat too much about knowing exactly who each person is and how they're related.

Narrator is Phenomenal

What really made this book for me was the narrator. Phenomenal! I could listen to Xe Sands all day. As far as the story, it was fairly engrossing and interesting - a fascinating ghost story. But maybe a wee bit predictable. It wasn’t super hard to figure out what happened, and some of it seemed kind of forced. But overall I really enjoyed this novel and I would seek out other work by this author, and definitely other work by the narrator.

Haunting and drawn in, Ah, the power of True Love

This story was very unexpected. Just when you think you have it figured out, a twist, you find yourself trying to warn Katie, "look out!" ..."no, don't relax!" Well done story like and the characters are so close to each other. Good Book
