Publisher's Summary

Liam Luckett is on an adventure. He's dropped out of his master's program without telling his overbearing parents and set off on a road trip across the country. Armed with little more than his guitar, he's looking for his best life. He never expected his car to break down in the middle of nowhere Vermont with a huge storm pending, leaving him stranded and at the mercy of a hunky local mechanic.

Jasper Cunningham is in a holding pattern. Three years after the death of his husband, he still hasn't moved on. A hot, younger stranded tourist is exactly the sort of complication this mechanic has been avoiding. But he also can't leave him in the snow. He brings Liam home and lets him sleep on the couch. The air is heavy with more than snow, and when the power goes out, the two men become closer than either of them expects.

Every silken note Liam sings on that guitar thaws Jasper's heart a little. Suddenly, Liam's itchy feet aren't so eager to move on. When their feelings get too big to ignore, the bond they've formed is tested. Will daybreak leave them going their separate ways?

Contains mature themes.

Wonderful book

Wonderful book and great addition to the series. I really liked the two main characters and the chemistry between them. The narrator was fantastic.

Meh

It had the potential to be good, but kind of fell flat. Any time I read a book where the characters say “I love you” for the first time and I find myself thinking, ‘really?’, it’s obvious that the author didn’t do a great job in building that relationship up for the reader.

not up to par

I've read nearly all of the V&V series, and this one isn't up to the quality of the rest.

repetitive, boring. wouldn't read this author again.

Those three things...

Loved it! Excellent narration! Very sweet story! I had some tears, some laughs and plenty of shake my head moments. Definitely recommend! Great HEA!

Non consensual warning

If you're a guest in someone's home. and they've made it clear they aren't interested, STOP. It's not an invitation to keep touching them, to pop out of the shower naked. Seriously, who does this? The story was annoying with little if any chemistry. One person was running away from daddy's expectations (he was 24...really?) and the other was dealing with grieving his dead spouse. I enjoyed walking through how to live again with the widower, but the annoying man-child houseguest was unbelievable.

Good story. Good narration.

Jasper was introduced in a previous book from the Vino and Veritas series. His friendship with Emmett from Unguarded leads to an encounter with Liam who is on trek through the fifty states. Jasper and Liam are a charming pair, and getting to know them was a treat. I had hopes for a bit more character development, but there is a second series so maybe more of their story will be told.

In addition to having the Vino and Veritas bar and bookstore as a running theme in this series, the secondary theme seems to be trauma in the adult children of horrible parents. Maybe Vermont is rallying to be a safe haven in a world of terrible parenting. Anyway... The narration was nicely done. Kirt Graves and Kale Williams are two of my favorite narrators. It was a bit strange hearing them narrate a story together, but their performances were nicely done.

Starting Over

3.5*

This was a sweet story about starting over, for both main characters.
I'm always so conflicted when a story features a character grieving their dead spouse, and trying to start over. I wonder sometimes if that's even really possible. But I think it must be, for most anyway, and I think it's probably necessary for many as well.
I thought Liam was sweet and just who Jasper needed to start living again.

Kale and Kirt were great, I really like them both!

Oh boy oh boy. This one had me smiling ear to ear. Especially since it was about Jasper. Loved it from front to back! I need more!

Good listen for an easy escape

Story was good. Engaged enough for easy listen while doing tasks IRL. Felt a little rushed to get to an ending. Could've used another chapter or two to breath. Enjoyed narration.

Daybreak

The story was good, but the writing left me a little underwhelming. I wish the author would’ve touched on more on Liam, and his life, and the outcome of his decision to stay left the story hanging.

Very heart warming and enjoyable

I have listened to and enjoyed a few Kate Hawthorne books so I had faith that I would enjoy this one too...thanks to the performances of Kale Williams and Kirt Graves - each brought out and enhanced aspects of Jasper and Liam's story that kept me listening. I felt the coldness of Vermont and I've never been there. I experienced the grief of the anger and loss of a spouse and I've never been married. I even felt the anxiety of coming out to a father that has high expectations and ignores anything you have to say about what you want. There was a little spice - although a bit muted compared to other Hawthorne books I have listened to but it was still delicious. I finished this book feeling warm and happy.

4 stars - I would listen again.

Good story, too short

Jasper was better developed as a character because he appeared in a previous book, but I feel like Liam needed a little more depth. Still a great read, but it felt like the middle of the book was missing. I would have liked to see a more prolonged period of falling in love and more butterflies.

Another great additional to the V&V series.

I was immediately intrigued by Jasper when we met him in Unguarded by Jay Hogan. So immediately had to listen to Jaspers story. A gruff and grumpy widower meets bubbly happy sunshine and sparks fly. Liam is all light and life and Jasper fights the pull he feels initially but after being a widower for 3 years he finally admits it’s time to experience life again.
Liam has his own issues to work out but as they come together. Their personalities bring these two men together at the perfect time for both of them. Wonderful narration. Wonderful story.
