Publisher's Summary

Edgar Award Finalist, Best Paperback Original, 2005 - A Dan Shaw Thriller

Dan Shaw, night school law student, ex-Army cop, and part-time investigator for hotshot attorney Thomas Petrie, has 57 hours to find a man who may already be dead. Peter Falconer is one of the golden boys of Bell Harbor, Florida - or he soon will be after inheriting the family fortune. But what seems to be yet another typical case of murder for profit and passion is about to take a sudden U-turn. For Shaw is about to uncover a brand of thrill killing whose sheer evil he can’t begin to fathom. And Shaw had better get to the bottom - and fast - or the hunt taking him from the Keys to the Caribbean and into the eye of a tropical storm will cost him his life.

Ron Faust is the author of 14 previous thrillers. He has been praised for his "rare and remarkable talent" (Los Angeles Times), and several of his books have been optioned for films. Before he began writing, he played professional baseball and worked at newspapers in Colorado Springs, San Diego, and Key West.

What the critics say

“Expert plotting, realistic characters, and brisk pace… Faust combines elements of the mystery and the thriller for a story that sails through each surprising twist and turn.” (The Denver Post)

Enjoyable Mystery-Thriller

I quite enjoyed Ron Faust's take on an "amateur-sleuth-uncovers-a-shocking-crime" story. Law student/part-time paralegal investigator Dan Shaw travels from mainland Florida to the Carribean to sort out what evil things his missing client had gotten involved in. The writing is often overdramatic and occasionally overwrought, but the investigation is plotted nicely and is satisfyingly twisty-turny.

As to presentation: Kaleo Griffin lets the book down somewhat with a distinctly "average" narration. His diction, timbre, and cadence are beyond reproach - but his voice-acting is unspectacular and he displays an oddly unemotive tone (potentially horrifying, tension-filled scenes are delivered the same way as playful banter/sexual innuendo-laced dialogue). Audible Studios Inc. could have cast this project better.

Altogether, I judge 'Dead Men Rise Up Never' worthy of 6.5 stars out of 10. With a different narrator, it would rate a Credit.. but as is, it's merely a reasonable 'Plus' selection.
