Publisher's Summary

The murder of a glamorous DC socialite becomes Alex Cross’ deadliest case since Along Came a Spider.

Kay Willingham led a life as glamorous as it was public - she was a gorgeous Georgetown socialite, philanthropist, and the ex-wife of the vice president. So why was she parked in a Bentley convertible idling behind a DC private school, in the middle of the night, with the man who was the head of that school? Who shot them both, point blank, and why? The shocking double homicide is blazed across the internet, TV, newspapers - and across Alex Cross's mind. Kay had been his patient once. And maybe more.

While John Sampson of DC Metro Police investigates the last movements of Christopher Randall, the educator killed along with Kay Willingham, detective Alex Cross and FBI special agent Ned Mahoney find unanswered questions from Willingham's past, before she arrived in DC and became known in DC society as someone who could make things happen. They travel to Alabama to investigate Kay's early years. There they find a world of trouble, corruption, and secrets, all of them closed to outsiders like Cross and Mahoney.

Kay had many enemies, but all of them seemed to need her alive. The harder the investigators push, the more resistance they find when they leave behind the polite law offices and doctors' quarters of the state capital. Alex Cross will need to use all his skills as a doctor, a detective, and a family man to prevent that resistance from turning lethal...again.

Too many chapters!

I like James Patterson, but listening rather than reading this book was difficult. Over 100 chapters approx 5 min each. I liked the voice of Alex Cross but some of the other voices were not good at all.

true cross fans should give it a chance

I see a lot of negative reviews and water based on the narrator and I think that is a natural reaction. Anytime somebody is used to a specific narrator in A specific character, it's hard to accept change. overall it is worth a credit, and possibly a purchase if you do enjoy it. Give it a chance though.

Narration Ruins Book

I've listened to audio books since they were on cassette tapes, and this is the worst narration I've ever heard. If it hadn't been an Alex Cross book, I'd have quit. I will not buy another one done by Brad Sanders.

Great story but so so narration

I've listened to Alex Cross since day one and this is another great story, I'm still listening but am very disappointed in the reader. I've gotten used to the voices and accents over the years and now here comes a new reader changing the voices and accents. It kind of takes away some of the enjoyment of the book. I still like Cross but not as much fun.

Who is this guy?!!

I hate this narrator's voice so much, I'm lost on the story! Where's Michael Boatman? Andre Braugher? Or my favorite, Peter Jay Hernandez? This narrator has Alex sounding like Sampson gargling rocks and Sampson sounding like Alex. It is soooooo wrong!!

I can not believe James Patterson wrote this book

I am an avid reader of James Patterson and especially the Alex Cross series. This book, however, was a complete disappointment. I have to believe Mr. Patterson let someone else take lead because it was so dry, there was no action, the characters were lost in this book. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

Ultra Boring, Zero Thrills

This is nothing like the original Cross books.
(we so miss those books, cringing at each murder, psycho killers, thrills & edge of your seat anticipation)
This book is not that. So much conversation between non essential & boring characters, absolutely No Thrills, No Chills. It's boring, a bit political, and lacks luster.
Refunding this one.

Disappointed

Not his best. Too many different pieces to the story. Narration was choppy and didn’t sound natural.
