Publisher's Summary

As co-owners of Eastport's beloved waterfront bakery The Chocolate Moose, Jake and Ellie know their customers expect them to cream the competition. But they're really just in it for fun, hoping to get Jake's daughter-in-law baking again. Those plans collapse when fearsome local curmudgeon Alvin Carter is murdered, and every crumb of evidence points to Tiptree family friend - and all-around sweet guy - Billy Breyer.

Billy's sisters beg Jake and Ellie to prove his innocence. After all, lots of folks had gone sour on Alvin - the only thing the retired lawyer liked better than bilking widows was swindling orphans, and several victims of his long-ago schemes still lived in Eastport. But just as the ladies begin sifting through the suspects, a series of grass fires blaze across the island, cutting off access to the mainland. Could someone be trying to hide the truth about Alvin's murder?

Now, Jake and Ellie will need all their courage - and an extra dash of that down-east Maine stubbornness - to sniff out the real killer before anyone else gets burned....

Dry, Bland, and Awkward Narration

I have read the other books in the chocolate series, but this is the first I have listened to.
This narrator sucks all the Maine flavor out of it and turns a great story into something dry, bland, and awkward sounding. I’m going to have to return this one and read it myself.

The narrator for the original series was AMAZING!!! Her accents were spot on, so the characters were charming and the dialog made sense. If you can’t get her back, please find someone who can do these stories justice.

Love this series but...

I started with the Home Repair is Homicide and then the Death by Chocolate series. I got over some of the inconsistencies between the 2 series of books, but honestly I feel Jake is way over the top clumsy in this one.... just over the top.

Meh

The narrator’s voice sounds computer generated. One of the characters created for this particular book was so ridiculously over-the-top as to be unbelievable.

Jake has become what she never wanted to be!

Jake and Eli have become simpering whiny females I’m so disappointed in the formation of these characters. I miss the strong women in the original fixer-upper series. So sad I will not be investing any more money in this series.

Ellie

I can’t believe the way Eli‘s character is portrayed in this book.. In all the previous books Eli has been intelligent, quick with all sorts of ideas ,and knew what was going on before it happened and in this book she’s made to be stupid.
