Publisher's Summary

A classic title from M. C. Beaton's New York Times best-selling Hamish Macbeth series.

About the best that can be said of wealthy Maggie Baird is that inside her middle-aged body, there still beats the heart of a beautiful tart. So when her car catches fire with Maggie in it, there are five likely suspects right on the premises of her luxurious Highlands cottage. Lochdubh police constable Hamish Macbeth has to question Maggie's timid niece and four former lovers, one of whom Maggie had intended to pick for her husband. All five are equally poor - with ample motive and opportunity to monkey with Maggie's car. Now to find the killer, the astute lawman must apply his extraordinary insight into human nature. But when the evidence appears to point to the wrong person entirely, Hamish must dig down deep to stop the real murderer's escape.

good listen

I liked this version most of all. I was a bit disappointed as to the murderer, but great otherwise

Another fun mystery

I am quite enjoying this series. There is humour, and mystery. Hamish is a very likeable character with an interesting view on life

Enjoying this find!

I had never “read” M.C.Beaton before but gave it a go and am quite pleasantly surprised! I really like the MacBeth character and his capers.
I do have to keep reminding myself that it was written 40-50 years ago so not always PC or up-to-date on labels or words we’ve replaced in today’s world, but it’s also a good reminder on how far we’ve advanced.
Heading onto the sixth book!

Sweet but not cloying

Another murder mystery set in the Highlands with our lazy, smart village bobby, Hamish Macbeth. The first victim has just moved into the village and is satisfyingly unpleasant. The plot is nicely entangled. The characters are sufficiently well drawn by and large. I just wish Priscilla were more detailed as she is a repeating character. I know, a small quibble to an enjoyable book.
