""Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick

""May be the best novel of [the year]. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.” Ron Charles, Washington Post

From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees and the recipient of the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for listeners of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

The narrator was top notch. His pacing, his inflection and accent all bought you right into the mind of Daemon. At first I was upset that it just seemed to be a retelling of David Copperfield using different names without bringing anything significantly new but the author did a great job of reimagining the original into a very relevant and contemporary story that was heartbreakingly poignant. Kudos to both the author and the narrator. Loved this book

Such endearing characters, in the midst of such devastating circumstances. Ms. Kingsolver is the most amazing storyteller. The research that must have gone into every detail of this book is astounding. I love what an activist she is, using her craft to bring light to very important, urgent issues of our time. Charlie Thurston deserves an Oscar.

Truly brilliant story and performance

What an incredible listen/ read and a fabulous performance. It covers the terrible story of opioid addiction in rural US from the point of view of an orphaned boy who also experiences the foster system, also shocking. Its not depressing though as there are good people who try their best and provide hope and love. I almost started it again from the beginning it was so good. The narration is also first class. The narrator subtly changes his voice and inflection as the boy gets older, brilliant acting.

Riveting, shocking, humbling

Despite starting Demon Copperhead on paperback I kept coming back to the audiobook version to hear the narrator bring it alive. Similar to how Barbara Kingsolver brought Appalachia to life for those of us that know it only for it's headline capturing troubles of late. A strong and incredibly memorable performance of a well-crafted and important story. Highly recommend.

Heartbreaking and Hopeful

This story kept me rivited. Even the narration, which I'm usually very criticle of, kept me enthralled. This heart opening and mind enhancing story doesn't wash over the hard bits of this little man's rags to riches to rags kinda life and still, I loved it. I can't wait to forget enough of this book so I can read it again! I am not surprised it won the Pulitzer prize.

Loved every word!

Wonderfully poetic insight into real-world issues. The progression of Demon’s internal dialogue through his coming-of-age offers unique perspective to stigmatized topics, delivered with top-notch narration that suits the character perfectly!

Amazing Storytelling and Narration

I loved this book! Disadvantaged young boy prevails despite undeserved hardships, and unrelenting negative yet sometimes positive influences. The ending realistically optimistic. My kind of story. I laughed and cried sometimes all at the same time. Thank you Barbara for writing this book!
