Story
It's not easy being the only human at the Community of Species Government - and especially not when you're the rescue case. Two years ago, I was planning to go to college, have a wild time, then settle into a normal life. Instead, I was kidnapped, spent months being a test subject, was in hiding for nearly a year, and then found out that my whole existence is a science experiment conducted by the bad guys. It's definitely time to reassess.

The world sees me as boring, dependable David. And I like it that way. I know things and I'm organized. Plus, I've seen firsthand the harm a chaotic life can inflict, and I'd rather have my lists and be called dull. Which is what makes it all the more disconcerting when a sexy elf declares his adoration and begins to "woo" me. What am I supposed to do?

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

The problem is that Parker Ellis has been straight since forever. And that makes it difficult to convince him that the two of us are meant to be together. And now, there's no point. All is lost. After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

When the vampire stalking me sent me a letter, I was prepared for my new life with the man I love to get thrown into chaos. But as the days stretch on and nothing happens, I become determined not to allow that monster to rule my life and decide that Marcus and I will move on. We can’t always allow the past to haunt us. If that includes pestering Marcus and harassing my fellow detectives, they’d better learn to love it because I’m not going anywhere, even if they like to remind me I’m the only human working in a department filled with vampires.

Being a hit man has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he’s caught on a fence would be one of them. While it’s not exactly love at first sight, he’s captured my interest and won’t let go. Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

You belong to me and I know it down deep, in muscle and bone, where my wolf lives. Avery Rhine isn’t an average homicide detective with the Chicago PD. In fact, Avery isn’t an average anything. Sure, as an omega he knows he’s at the bottom of the food chain, but that’s never slowed him down. Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Publisher's Summary
I work for Lucifer. Only, it's not as cool and satanic as it sounds.
The truth is, I'm an admin assistant who applied for a job that sounded kind of interesting and ended up working for the Community of Species Government. I'm the only human in the office, and basically I ride herd on a team of rambunctious shifters and demons.
I also spend a lot of time avoiding Gideon Bailey, the demon I had a one-night stand with right before I took this job. He hates me, and I really want to avoid being murdered. But I've been offered a promotion that will mean working with him, so we're both going to have to get over it.
Plus, people are going missing. Pregnant people. And the word is that someone is dabbling in genetic experimentation. Putting a stop to that is more important than the sexual tension Gideon and I have been ignoring...isn't it?

Laugh out loud hilarious and amazing performance
Ms Masters has written an incredibly funny tale here and I couldn’t imagine anyone else performing it but the masterful Joel Leslie. Filled with great world building and loveable characters brought to life by Joel Leslie. I highly recommend this if you like a great story, filled with laughs and a few well written (acted!) sexy times. I’m of no doubt that I’ll be an avid collector of all the books in this series in audiobook.

Lots of funny, fresh new wisecracks
I can conclude; demons definitely do it better! Joel Leslie delivered a crackling fresh and humorous paranormal romantic comedy, filled with fun wisecracks and devilish hot moments. He totally went and resuscitated my love for silly characters. The author wrote a whole fresh set of dialogues and comebacks, feeding my audiobook addiction and inspiring new hopes that I haven’t reached rock-bottom, and that I haven’t heard it all yet.
Joel Leslie does intoxicated scenes extremely well. The drunken bar scene was the best. We are all enveloped in the worlds’ troubles and problems and I am sure listeners would agree, we need more comedy, and would surely welcome the reprieve from all the shit flying around us.
I will continue onto book 2 and I do recommend this audiobook and all of its silliness.
Happy Listening

Wrong Pairing imo
2.6〜2.8 stars. I am not a fan of Gideon and Sam as a couple, I felt much more chemistry between Sam and Aiden (I also liked him much better)... I just didn’t feel a connection between SxG, even their “chemistry” is mehh. It probably doesn’t help that the first time we were introduced to Gideon (and before I knew the main love interest was Gideon), I said to myself I hope this isn’t him...😑 🤦🏻♀️. I don’t know, I just feel more for Aiden than I ever did for Gideon 🤷🏻♀️.
Also, while I do really love Joe Leslie as a narrator, his steamy scenes nearly always make me cringe or try not to laugh because they are so over done, it’s like bad acting (primarily for the bottom if there is one).... Sam’s voice just felt so over done and over exaggerated and a little annoying. Additionally, the (French????) accent that he used for Gideon was quite difficult at times to understand... I’m also confused as to where it came from but 🤷🏻♀️.
I probably won’t listen to the next book because I’ve heard that the two MCs featured there are even more annoying 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

* Spoilers *
I believe this is the first book I've read/listened to by this author. I'm not exactly sure what to think of this book. I know for sure though that I had been wanting to read this book and the rest of the series for quite a while, but decided to wait until the audio book came out. The cover of this book and the summary also made it very appealing to read. On one hand, I knew what I was getting into, but on the other hand I didn't. I was a bit surprised that the first sexual scene happened in chapter 2, but I really shouldn't have since it was explained in the summary. My favorite scene throughout the whole book has to be during the lunch scene when Sam gets drunk. It was absolutely hilarious. There were a few scenes that I was either a bit uncomfortable with, cringed, or had second hand embarrassment for Sam. I also thought that this book was filled with an overload of information and some of it was a bit confusing or overwhelming. On one hand I appreciated all of the information, but on the other hand it was a lot to take in and some things I kind of forgot when it pertained to something later on. Like shifters needing someone else to open their phones, which I still don't understand why that happens. Relationship wise between Gideon and Sam, I honestly was as confused as Sam was about Gideon and his actions. I honestly would have liked some insight on to what he was thinking in his perspective. I also felt that due to the amount of information and focus on the plot ( along with how his character is to understand at times), there wasn't a whole lot of development between them on-screen on their relationship besides their lust and attraction for each other. I did find it cute how touchy feely they were with each other and how Sam ran straight to Gideon for protection when he suffered from paranoia.
I do feel a bit sad on what happened to Lily, but on the other hand I felt I wasn't really given the opportunity to really connect or have strong feelings for her (become attached to her character). I even suspected that she might be the mole in the group since she was the one assigned to watch over Sam and it was her account that was copied and hacked into. I was a bit surprised by all of the time jumps, which I'm not used to that. I also think that due to not reading MM for a while it was a bit uncomfortable reading/listening to those scenes (sexual scenes).
* Narration *
The narration was done quite nicely. I did kind of think that the narrator was reading a bit fast in the beginning, but I got used to it. I think I will continue with the series once the next audio book comes out.

This is a fun unique take on the paranormal. I loved the story and read it several times before the audio book was released. I was very excited to listen to this story as I enjoy light hearted fun listens while working. Joe Leslie did not let me down, he did a wonderful job bring the banter and fun I always read in the story to life. Exciting, fast paced, sexy fun!
A world of creatures living in plain sight with the human population, complete with their own leaders and government agencies, is the basis of this series. This book introduces the world, and Is a bit mind-boggling at first to understand. However, once the blinders are off and you ‘see’ the reality of the complicated world that Masters has created, the story dives into an engaging, fast paced, action packed mystery/adventure! Packed with a cast of super fun and engaging characters that you can’t help but love, this story starts a series that you’re sure to enjoy! I would give Joel Leslie 10 stars for this book if I could- one of my favorite voice actors, his portrayal of a conversation between 6 or 7 characters, each with super distinct personalities and wildly divergent world accents, is off the charts excellent!
