Publisher's Summary

Is it possible to be so much alike that you're completely incompatible? Tess and Sidney have both committed the greatest online dating faux pas possible: uploading old pictures. When the two tough butches meet at a small town bar, they think they're getting the femmes of their dreams.

So begins the awkward - yet sordid - acquaintance of the only two lesbians in town. Local rancher Tess doesn't have time for women who aren't her type, and new-girl-in-town Sidney isn't interested in someone who only sees her as a piece of fresh meat.

Yet they keep bumping into each other...is it fate, or just small-town karma?

A bad date turns into a one-night stand. A one-night stand turns into a casual relationship. A casual relationship becomes Sidney's greatest amusement, and Tess's biggest nightmare as she's slowly forced out of the closet in conservative River Rock.

Desperate times are afoot in the sleepy, gossipy hamlet of rural America. It's going to take more than nerves of steel to survive the isolationism and people with nothing better to do than ruin their neighbors' lives.

It's going to take a whole lotta introspection - and love.

Really enjoyed listening

I loved listening to this book. Hilarious. Great characters and the very best narrator. She should read all of your books. I was engaged and laughing for the first page. Truly unique characters and intriguing plot.

Very enjoyable love story

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review. Desperate Times is not the typical FF romance that I would go for, but I quickly found myself engrossed in the story. Tess and Sidney are two butch lesbians living in a very conservative ranching town. The two meet through an online dating service where both of them have posted less than accurate information about themselves. Despite both looking for more fem partners, they know that the pool of lesbians in the area is slim, to say the least. So they agree to become bedroom buddies. Over time, their relationship grows to more than just sex and they fall in love. I found Sidney to be much less butch than Tess, making the story feel more like a traditional FF love story. There were still flashes of dominance in her, but she definitely fit more of the role of the fem girlfriend. I found the story was paced very well and the sex scenes were hot, hot, hot! Marie Smith was a wonderful narrator for this story and made it enjoyable to listen to and even laugh at from time to time. It is definitely one I would listen to again.

Good story, good narration, good sex, go buy ...

I was gifted a copy of this book free of charge in return for my unbiased & honest review . I enjoyed this book immensely . Its a story of two women seeking love/sex from other women in a small country town . Tess & Sidney find each other & they appear to be so different but want the same thing . Tess appears as a total bitch & treats Sidney like shit . Sidney is a saint for putting up with Tess but I suppose need & lust makes us do odd things . The story is well thought out & moves at a fast pace , it is definitely erotica . The narration by Marie Smith is excellent . I hope this book is a total work of fiction but alas I doubt it is . It exposes homophobia & bias in small town thinking world wide .

Small town fun

How do you describe a small town of less than 500 folks. Homophobia ran rampant and it was fine. Had lots of laughs.

Funny, witty and oh so heartwarming!

She did it again! Hildred Billings once again did not disappoint with this story! Narrator, Marie Smith did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. The voices were all distinctively different and well done!

Saddle up for a good read.

So, this was my first time reading a butch for butch title and though I wasn't quite expecting it, I really enjoyed it. The humor through sarcasm throughout was an added bonus. Living in a city where one has the pick of the litter, I can only imagine how desperate one might become moving to a small, country town where the pickings are just shy of non-existent. I will say, this helped to better understand the switch dynamic and how difficult it can be at times for two type A women to come together. I loved Sidney but I think Tess was my favorite because she evolved the most as she overcame some personal and very public struggles. All in all, I would definitely recommend this book.

An unusual love story

The premise for this story is rather sad. Two lonely women in a tiny town, not another lesbian in sight. They’re both butch (Tess more than Sidney), attracted to very feminine women. Certainly not to each other. Yet they decide to give it a try. They’re both looking for companionship in the long run but first and foremost for sex. So that’s how it begins. They’re also both really sweet (though Tess hides it well) and interesting and unexpectedly grow on each other. It’s an unusual love story but it’s a love story all the same. Desperate Times is one of these books that come to life in audio. I gave it three stars when I read it but the audiobook version gets four stars. The narration by Marie Smith brings a new dimension to the characters. Tess’s complexities come out in a much clearer way in the audiobook, I think. I had a hard time liking her when I first read Desperate Times but felt I understood her better when I heard her. Things were much easier with Sidney both times, she’s much more laidback and easier to get, if only because she’s not confronted to as many obstacles as Tess is and can therefore afford to see things in a simpler way. If I had to summarize this story, or delineate its morale, I’d say it’s not only about not judging a book by its cover, it’s also about the unexpected treasures you can find when you go beyond appearances, however unwillingly. In the end, Tess and Sidney are perfect for each other, which they wouldn’t have guessed if they had not found themselves in what seemed to be an impossible situation. They were more or less forced together, for lack of anything (or anyone) better, but it might also have been fate. After all, how did Sidney come to live in such a tiny town when she could have moved anywhere? Fate, I say.

very enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. great story of the only 2 lesbians in a small town who sort of hook up even though they're both butch and both wanted more girly girls... there was humor and sex and horse riding and more sex. the characters were great - even the cowboy with the quick temper and limited vocabulary. Narrator was great. overall, very good!

Keeping it real

I was very much impressed with the author's ability to take two very different characters and turn them both around despite the prejudices of the people surrounding them. Marie Smith did an excellent job of portraying the characters and bringing it all to life. I would definitely read more from this author. I was given a free copy of this audio in return for an unbiased review.

good book!

I'd never listen to a book by Hildred Billings but gave Desperate Times a try. I loved how the characters were very real. and that they were not your typical blonde kcock- outs. these characters had flaws. and were butch. I haven't found a lot of books on them. The story starts off at a bar at their first meeting. where none of them look anything like the profile pictures they use on the online dating site they met on. there are parts in the book, where Tessa needs her butt kicked, but to me that's what made it real. Marie smith did a great job narrating this book. and I would listen to her again. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
