Three brothers rise from rag to riches may be a little too miraculous at times, but the historic settings are captivating, the three characters modern and fascinating. After reading the whole saga some years back I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the saga during my walks through nature or driving long distances. Well read, it carries a „Zurechtrücken“, a readjusting of historic facts and events that might seem heretic to some English people (mind you, the Belgians are decried the most) but in all fairness, history has been written by the winners and the former might and sophistication of the German culture and technology buried under the image of the bad, ugly Nazi. That is part of the story, but not the only part, and most countries have contributed their share of atrocities, as is pointed out throughout the book, sometimes in a mere sidenote. The author is clearly on a mission that I can sympathize with. Apart from that great entertainment, a trip through the awakening of the technology age - and how enthusiastic and hopeful they were in 1900!!
