I didn't enjoy this book.

The narrator of this book was terrible. I enjoyed the first book, but not this one. It isn't the story so much as the way he reads it. I am not sure if he is reading any of the others, but I will not be buying them.

Die trying

This book was an entertaining listen. I would have given the book a 5-star rating but I didn’t find the story as gripping as most of the Jack Reacher stories. Regardless, for anyone interested in action-adventure books, it was still very good.

Enjoyable

I had mixed reviews about this book mostly about the caliber of narration but found it to be quite enjoyable. In fact I had purchased book 3 within listening to only 3 hours of book 2. Definitely word a listen the story telling is very good and it’s not easy to assume what’s going to happen

Solid with a few inconsistencies

Chinook is pronounced shuh nuk. The most irritating thing about any audiobook is an unprepared narrator. Mispronounciation is inexcusable. You're supposed to be a professional. Know your material! It irritates me so much I have returned books just to avoid it.

The main character seems inconsistent. One moment he's doing all the math to make a 1200 yard headshot in his head. The next he's struggling with a simple grade school van A is traveling at X and helicopter B is traveling at Y problem. Strange since in order to do the math to hit somebody walking with a bullet you need to be able to do the math in the second problem.

Amazingly written story

This story has amazing imagery.. first 1/2 chapter I wasn’t sure about the narrator, since it’s different from book 1… but than he disappeared and the story took over… VERY WELL DONE!!!

I Kinda Understand the Popularity.. But..

After listening to this novel, I have to say Jack Reacher fans are correct to question casting Tom Cruise as this 'Force Of Nature' character. Reacher is just so overwhelming - relentless, fearless, ruthless, single-mindedly heroic - that Tom's 5'7" size (and dazzling smile) literally *cannot* portray the gritty intimidation Jack Reacher exudes.
Regardless, Lee Child's iconic hero is a blast to follow: demolishing criminal enterprises (that Police/Military are too bound by legalities to confront) like a wrathful hurricane. He represents a form of unfettered Justice that all of us want to happen sometimes (What!?! Criminals have Rights!?! Surely Not That Monster!!).
The action sequences are written well, the description of weapons is accurate enough for any gun enthusiast to geek out on, Reacher gets a ton of pussy, and his cockiness when staring down the barrel of a bad guy's Glock stimulates a flood of "Hell Yeah" Testosterone.

The problem is that the character is so poorly planned it's laughable. This protagonist makes zero sense. He has no motivation (other than "Those guys Bad. Must Kill!"), a two-dimensional background (at best), and straight-up silly "hero" qualifications (He's a US Marine MP - not even Special Forces - and most of his fighting experience comes from being a Bouncer at local Bars). This stuff is distracting and entertaining, but it's headshakingly implausible.

Johnathan McClain turns in an unspectacular reading performance in this audiobook. His diction, timbre, pacing, and cadence are passable, but his tone is too-serious and the voice-acting is below-average (female character voices are weak and McClain's Chicago accents are just plain bad). Penguin Audio doubtless made a mistake hiring McClain for books 2, 3, and 4 back in 2012 (although Dick Hill - 2015 onward - isn't much of an upgrade).

If you are a Jack Reacher fan, this is at most a "decent" entry. With a fairly weak plot (the kidnapping of a beautiful FBI Lawyer by domestic terrorists for a contrived 'blackmail' reason) and subpar narration, it rates 4.5 stars out of 10. You aren't crazy to buy this audiobook - and to keep consuming this adrenaline-driven Crack - but I personally will be giving up on the 'Jack Reacher' series.

[I just can't get past the writing deficiencies - 'Die Trying' is an examplar (admittedly a weak one) for a series of books that are too-formulaic and obviously "cranked-out" for the intended audience (TWENTY-FIVE books!?!). It's straight-up Pulp.
I find the work of authors like Hurwitz, Mars, and even Greaney much more palatable in the Action-Thriller genre - they at least put some effort into creating a realistic character]

1940 “B” movie narration

The plot is a typical Jack Reacher but the narration is a poor imitation of a Jimmy Cagney impression. I kept expecting to hear “You dirty rats..you’ll never take me alive”

I like the Jack Reacher novels but will not get another with this narrator.

Where is Dick Hill?

I've just started this book, and having read every other Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child, I have no doubt I'm going to like the story, but...
This narrator is milk toast, when I really wanted a hot, buttery, cinnamon bun.
This narrator is weak tea, when I really wanted hot, black, coffee.
This narrator is near beer, when I really wanted a stiff shot of bourbon.
This narrator is Jonathan McClain, when I really wanted Dick Hill.
For me, Dick Hill is Jack Reacher. I'm sure McClain is a nice guy, and he reads well enough, but he is not Dick Hill, and for me, that means he is not Jack Reacher. I'm not through the first chapter, but I really miss Dick Hill.

Reading the Series: Skip This One

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It's one thing to suspend belief, it's another thing to suspend disbelief. I would have kept the story line about the process of dealing with a hostage to be more realistic. I don't care if you supported Bush I, Clinton, Bush II or Obama (the book is from the 90s, but in some ways is timeless), the reaction of political and military leaders in the plot is beyond belief and totally incompetent.

What was most disappointing about Lee Child’s story?

The director of the FBI and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are not going to be heading to Montana for secret maneuvers without a lot of people knowing what's going on. In addition, the director of the FBI would absolutely know that he couldn't assault a fully armed right wing military compound with handguns and eight marines. An army mobile command post is going to be equipped -- at a minimum -- with USGS topo maps and not a AAA atlas. If I had not read the most recent Reacher books and was basing my reading on a pure chronolgical effort, I would have stopped about halfway through this book, and not read another--especially after watching big, ham-fisted, 6'5, 250 pound, blonde hair, blue eyed muscled Reacher turn into 5'7 Tom Cruise. The story would have worked just fine with a more realistic military/FBI hostage preparedness. Lee Child was lucky this one didn't kill his character.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jonathan McClain?

The bigger problem is that book 1, and all the later books are Dick Hill. Hill is perfect as Reacher. McCain is too smooth and gentle. I believe he is a good narrator, but just not for this series.

Was Die Trying worth the listening time?

Sadly, no. If you want to be able to say you listened to all the Reacher books--and every one except this one has been a 4- or 5-star winner...get the abridged version or check it out from the library.

I feel like I was robbed

This Book was dressed up as a newly released Lee Child: Reacher Novel.
The narrator butchered this book. I feel like a fool for the fact I had bought it a year ago. It was presented in a manner that allowed me to not check my Reacher series.
I am ultimately at fault, this I can admit.
My ears still burn with the noises that Mr. Jonathan McClain made of the voices throughout the entire novel. I am certain he could perform well in a different genre, because of the redeeming quality I heard in the freeform pure narration parts but not the actual characters voices. This books intensity was displaced due to the characters being delivered in a cartoon like fashion.
I have never written a bad review because the books I have not liked are books that are not in my taste. Yet this time I am actually disturbed, and feel if someone had listened to this book with it’s Narration it may ruin the fantastic talent, and action Lee Child brings to life in the Reacher Series.

Skip this book - not up to par

Fortunately Lee figures out, in later books in the series, that less is more. Here he pile on the 'unrealistic suspense' to the point of ridiculousness. The story jumps all over the place, is lacks a sense of realism and is in face just plain stupid in some parts. I started skipping chapters just to get to the end and then just the in the towel, There was not more intrigue because the story line had gone beyond belief. If you enjoy the Jack Reacher series, as I do, skip this one.

WRONG narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I'll admit, I haven't even finished this book yet but I'm afraid I might not be able to due to the narrator. He really can't hold a candle for these books compared to Dick Hill and his treatment of Reacher and the other characters is laughable and completely ruins the tone/pacing of the book.

Great book - mediocre voice work

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was fast paced and balanced as it moved between the various sub-plots. Goor, and enjoyable. Loved the book, not the narration.

How could the performance have been better?

The voices and 'accents' that the narrator chose to use were forced and poorly done. From the sounds of it, he has never been to Boston, but makes the listener suffer through his interpretation of a Bostonite who lives in Chicago. Also, his attempts at doing other voices (Korean dry cleaner and other shop keepers was painful and borderline insulting). Have to suffer through 3 books before we get back Dick Hill.

STILL IN PROCESS OF LISTENING TO IT, BUT.....

How did the narrator detract from the book?

DID NOT LIKE THE NARRTOR, DID NOT PUT ENOUGH INTO THE CHARACTERS OR EVEN THE STORY...HE IS BORING!THIS GUY IS SO BORING I DON'T EVEN WANT TO LISTEN TO HIM, LITERALLY PUTS ME TO SLEEP;ALMOST MONOTONE, LIKE HE ISN'T EVEN ENJOYING THE STORY!

Any additional comments?

WHY DO THE AUTHORS CHANGE THE NARRATOR IN THEIR SERIES...DICK HILL DID AN EXECELENT NARRATING JOB AND HAD EXCITEMENT IN HIS VOICE...AUTHOR MADE A HUGH MISTAKE BY CHANGING HIS NARRATOR....LEE CHILD, KEEP THE SAME NARRATOR IN YOUR SERIES, DICK HILL WAS EXTREMELY GOOD AT ADDING EXCITEMENT TO THE STORY LINE, HE KNOWS THE CHARACTERS AND MAKE THEM COME ALIVE

can't do it "Right!"

What would have made Die Trying better?

Narator, story line and no more "Right!" It's all bad.

I listened to the first book and wasn't all that impressed but I thought I'd try book two in hopes it would get better. I don't think I'm even halfway through. Thank goodness I can return this and get my credit back.

What was most disappointing about Lee Child’s story?

It is so far fetched that you can't even pretend any of the events could possibly be remotely true.

And please stop with the "Right" although there not as many as there was in book one.

How could the performance have been better?

My main complaint is the voices of two characters (I'm not even halfway so there could be more)

The first is the bad guy boss. He's described as being a big man. So big that he almost doesn't fit in a truck front seat with 2 other guys. Well his voice sounds like a 5 year old girls when she's playing with her dolls by herself. Heck the switchboard operator sounds more masculine then the big bad boss.

I'm not even sure who the second one belongs to except he's male and a commander of something. His voice is the exact same voice of the bad guy boss.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Die Trying?

First would be remove "Right" unless it's a question, direction or agreement.

Second would be Reacher and Holly getting personal while being held hostage and within a day.

I really couldn't get past the narration to pay much attention.

Any additional comments?

Waste of a credit. Thank god I can return it and get my credit back.

Jack Reacher Novel 21 to be released in one month

Die Trying is the second novel in the Jack Reacher series. Novels 2, 3, and 4 are the only ones not narrated by Dick Hill. I think Johnathon McClain does a credible narration job, but lots of other reviewers disagree. In Die Trying Reacher is kidnapped by an Idaho militia along with a female FBI agent whose dad is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and whose godfather is the US president. Everyone except General Leon Garber, Reacher's old Army commander, believes Reacher is part of the kidnap plot. General Garber and especially his lawyer daughter are major characters in later novels in the Reacher series. Die trying has lots of action and intense suspense.

Lee Child has re-released at least 5 novels in the series (#1, 5, 6, 9, and 10) with no changes in title, narrator (Dick Hill), or content, (not a single word change). To say the least such re-releases irritate me. On the other hand I do not understand why the three novels narrated by McClain have not been re-released with Dick Hill narrating.

Another author, Barry Eisler, re-released most of his books but in doing so he changed the titles and the narrator to himself. Eisler is a great narrator and his re-releaases are much better than the original releases. Lee Child's re-releases make no sense.

Pretty Great Actually

If you could sum up Die Trying in three words, what would they be?

Intense, Suspenseful, Exciting

Any additional comments?

I've read most of the Reacher books and listened to a couple, but I have to say this ranks up there with my favorites. Some parts are little dated now (fax machines and videotape) but the heart of the story holds up great. Kept me guessing about the "bad guy" until the end.

I also thought the narration was terrific. I've heard Dick Hill also, but I thought Jonathan McClain sounded much younger, which fits more with my image of Jack Reacher. Also he had an intensity that I liked (not to mention I felt his female voices were better than most men I hear narrating audiobooks - they usually sound whiny or annoying).

I thought it was great. Totally worth a credit. Going to check out some more.
