Publisher's Summary

Michael Havel was flying over Idaho en route to the holiday home of his passengers when the plane's engines inexplicably died, forcing a less than perfect landing in the wilderness. And, as Michael leads his charges to safety, he begins to realize that the engine failure was not an isolated incident.

Juniper Mackenzie was singing and playing guitar in a pub when her small Oregon town was thrust into darkness. Cars refused to start. Phones were silent. And when an airliner crashed, no sirens sounded and no fire trucks arrived. Now, taking refuge in her family's cabin with her daughter and a growing circle of friends, Juniper is determined to create a farming community to benefit the survivors of this crisis.

But even as people band together to help one another, others are building armies for conquest.

What the critics say

"The novel's dual themes - myth and technology -should appeal to both fantasy and hard SF readers as well as to techno-thriller fans." ( Publishers Weekly)

Good, but...

The story was very creative and easy to get into. it did fall into a couple tropes that I wasn't a fan of - predictability, eye-rolling relationship moments, shark jumping - but it was a really fun read regardless.

Great performance for a great book

A phenomenal story well executed. The only issue is Todd pronounces "rations" like "ray-shuns," but great otherwise

I have read the books and thoroughly enjoyed them.

My only criticism of the audiobook was that I felt that the narrator was unable to bring the strength of Juney's voice to the narration... other than that, it was very well done and enjoyable.

The Stirling Format Succeeds Again

I enjoyed this book and have provided a brief explanation of what to expect.

The Stirling Format is:
Good guy and bad guy archetypes (no nuances)
Action and Battles
An engaging plot brought on by a cool idea ("The Change")

The setting is an alternate history (Stirling has done other stories like this) where the laws of nature have changed and the people of this land are forced to live in a world free of technology. Swords, shields, and arrows are weapons, horses and bikes are transportation and society devolves into feudal times. Don't expect any characters with great flaws and problems coming to some great revelation about who they are. This story is about survivors and how they navigate this new world and the challenges it brings. They form communities, alliances, and engage in battles to protect their people and communities from the great tyranny of the enemy. Fun and action orientated, this book was an enjoyable listen.

The start of your next adventure

Honestly the only thing negative i have to say is the narrator butchers gaelic words. However he is reading them as written, which is fair. Audible gets a pass.

Trigger warning for those sensitive to rape or violence. This is not the book for you. It is the fall of the world as we know it, cannibalism included.

The plot and pacing are excellent! But be warned, you'll probably be on the hook for the next half dozen books after finishing.

SCA Apocalypse

A story about how if you were in the apocalypse and kept tripping over people from the SCA or who actually had practical knowledge. I didn't like this story on my first read but now I really enjoy how people go from normal everday life to having to farm by hand. Even the story makes fun of itself for trying to explain how electricity & guns stopped working: "Space bats!" #Audible1

great story but..

I love this story but the narrators attempt at portraying femal voices is abhorrent. It would have been tolerable if read without his valiant efforts at feminism.
