Publisher's Summary

From John Robbins, a new edition of the classic that awakened the conscience of a nation.

Since the 1987 publication of Diet for a New America, beef consumption in the United States has fallen a remarkable 19 percent. While many forces are contributing to this dramatic shift in our habits, Diet for a New America is considered to be one of the most important.

Diet for a New America is a startling examination of the food we currently buy and eat in the United States and the astounding moral, economic, and emotional price we pay for it.

Amazing Read

This book is fantastic. It is so full of information that I will have to read it again. It covers everything from the way factory farms raise animals, to diseases, health problems and allergies, toxic chemicals, global warming. Not only did it confirm the choices I had already made in my eating and health, but it also gave me ideas on how I want to improve my family’s foot print for the planet. I want my children and grandchildren to live in a better world than the one they will be inheriting if we continue to move in the direction we are. I just wish that everyone would read this. If you choose not to make any lifestyle changes, that’s cool, but at least we would all be informed.

Eye-opening

I can’t believe I never read this before—it’s about time! In fact, I hope that more people will read or listen to it. While it was a bit repetitive at times, it drove the point home that whether for our health, our planet or humane treatment of animals, the more each of us moves toward a plant-based diet, the better. It’s good that there were many times that Robbins suggested that even one meatless day a week would help—maybe that will help people who aren’t ready for drastic change to contribute to better health, humane treatment of animals and saving the earth. Hard not to sound preachy, even just saying that.

The narration was generally very good, but got too dramatic at times. Attempts at pseudo-impressions when quoting, and over dramatized emphasis of some words or statements pushed it over the top now and then.

Overall, highly recommend it!
