Baffling and beloved, with the capacity to go from joy to frustration in seconds, young children are some of the most misunderstood people on the planet. Parents and caregivers struggle with these little ones, who are known for their extreme behaviour, from tantrums, resistance, and aggression to separation anxiety, bedtime protests, and not listening. The key to understanding youngsters lies in realizing that their challenging behaviour is not personal, nor is it a disorder or deficit.

Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

Over her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children’s challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families are understandably focused on correcting or improving a child’s lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other “out of control” behavior. But, as she has shared with these families, a perspective shift is needed. Behavior, no matter how challenging, is not the problem but a symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child’s unique physiologic makeup.

Publisher's Summary
Sure to become a classic on female empowerment, a groundbreaking exploration of the personal, cultural, and global implications of intergenerational trauma created by patriarchy, how it is passed down from mothers to daughters, and how we can break this destructive cycle.
Why do women keep themselves small and quiet? Why do they hold back professionally and personally? What fuels the uncertainty and lack of confidence so many women often feel? In this paradigm-shifting book, leading feminist thinker Bethany Webster identifies the source of women’s trauma. She calls it the Mother Wound - the systemic disenfranchisement of women by the patriarchy - and reveals how this cycle is perpetuated by wounded mothers who unconsciously pass on damaging beliefs and behaviors to their daughters.
In her workshops, online courses, and talks, Webster has helped countless women re-examine their lives and their relationships with their mothers, giving them the vocabulary to voice their pain, and encouraging them to share their experiences. In this manifesto and self-help guide, she offers practical tools for identifying the manifestations of the Mother Wound in our daily life and strategies we can use to heal ourselves and prevent our daughters from enduring the same pain. In addition, she offers step-by-step advice on how to reconnect with our inner child, grieve the mother we didn’t have, stop people-pleasing, and, ultimately, transform our heartache and anger into healing and self-love.
Revealing how women are affected by the Mother Wound, even if they don't personally identify as survivors, Discovering the Inner Mother revolutionizes how we view mother-daughter relationships and gives us the inspiration and guidance we need to improve our lives and ultimately create a more equitable society for all.

Painful narration
The content is so so interesting, but the narration is so painfully robotic. I can barely get through this audiobook.
When picking an audiobook, please double check to see if the book is narrated by the author!! Glennon Doyle’s “Untamed” gave me goosebumps listening to it. Such a shame this book had the same potential but because of the narration, it couldn’t deliver :(

While a lot of her personal story did not resonate with me, she took the time to address many different situations and experiences of others. Do not be put off if the first couple chapters don't seem like "you". I found this all extremely helpful and I look forward to applying all that I've learned!

Scary accurate!
There were times while listening to this book where I thought Bethany maybe had CCTV cameras in my childhood home! In all seriousness, this book was very helpful for me to understand that I had done nothing wrong and my mother was actually quite normal for the times. I'm glad that there are so many of my generation and younger who are walking a different path with their children.

Please see farther then the words 💜
I was really looking forward to that book, I had seen some quotes from it and pre-ordered it 💜 I was not disappointed and really enjoyed all the teaching 💜 But I feel that this books comes from the perspective of someone who has had a lot of life struggle from her relationship to her mother 💜 And that this book has a lot to teach about way more then that 💜 So if you read/listen to it I highly suggest to open your mind when she says mother ( can be parent - father - authority figure - lover ) and when she says daughter ( can be son ) 💜 with an open mind this book is rich of insight to live a more authentic life

Meh.
Look, I’m a fan of Bethany Webster and have learned from her writings and enjoyed listening to podcast interviews with her over the years. She’s done big important work that has benefited me and countless others! But this book, partly narration and partly just the writing, feels so long and drawn and out and I couldn’t finish it.

Left with Questions and concerns.
Repetative.
Seriously concerned about the need for a 20 year relationship with Therapist Nicole. Especially when the author admits to getting from Therapist Nicole all the things she wanted from her mother.
Missed opportunity speaking about the roll/impact her father had on her life. This is a parental Wound vs. specifically a female mother wound. Predictably leads into a relationship with a woman after hours and hours of hounding on the idea of "toxic masculinity".
Poor quality end of chapter review Questions.
Had a few interesting ideas and the computer reader wasn't to bad. 3/5 stars.

Empowering
This book spoke to me in ways that I have needed my whole life. It validated and helped me identify the target areas that I am seeking to heal. It allows me to understand that I have freedom of choice and the a relationship bond isn’t synonymous with being bound to a relationship. I am truly grateful for this book and have already recommended it to a couple of my friends and even played a chapter for my mother. Ultimately, my hope and personal mission is to show up as my most authentic self. To rectify my relationships with my sons. To apologize from an informed and reframed perspective. To build up the confidence to carry out the things that I have always been passionate about. To help others feel loved and supported as well.
Thank you for your message in this book.

Just what my soul needed to heal.
Thank you for sharing your light; it’s been such an uplifting and healing book. Gave me answers around family dynamics and how patriarchal systems were infused to create the toxic environment we get to inhabit. At all times we must choose the truth of our souls and act accordingly. It sure does take courage & fierce integrity- I thank you 🙏🏽

Excellent guidance
Listening to this, i no linger feel so aline in my pursuit to "not be like my mother". Now i understand the reason for the confusing relationship I have with her. More explanation of how to reprogram my own behavior would be good. The death mother apocalyptic mother explanation made sense to me, but seemed a little out of place with the rest of the book style.

Great
This book is a game changer. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on boundaries. Thank you Bethany for taking the time to write it. And I loved the discussion from Bethany’s therapist in the appendix to provide context to the therapy within which all of Bethany’s spirallic transformations took place.
