Predictable story, performance mediochre

After reading a number of detective/murder books by other authors, I came to this one with high expectations. I also misunderstood the author - I thought it was THE Stephen King, but not so, and the story was nowhere near as gripping as it would have been if it had been by King the Original.

This Stephen King seems to be concentrating far too much on, shall we say, the physical side of the relationships the central character has with a number of women. I'm not prudish about sex details, but the constant harping on about the physicality took away from the mystery aspect and the police detective work - in fact, there really was no police detective work in this book.

I'm writiing this review after listening to most of the book, with about two hours to go, and I'd be happy to have my opinion changed by a surprise ending, but I'm really not expecting it.

The reader doesn't seem to have read the book first, because there are a number of places where the emphasis on certain words was wrong and resulted in an ungrammatical sentence. And I've never in my life heard a worse attempt at a Scottish accent than the one this reader tried at one point in the book. It made me squirm! I didn't like his voice or his approach, and I would consciously avoid anything read by him in the future.

Meh

it started off pretty good but I definitely struggled to finish the story. near the end the old switch-a-roo got old and I just wanted it to be over. hopefully the next one is better.
