About this listen
You always remember your first love. Don’t you…?
’Hilarious, warm and life affirming’ Jenny Colgan
It began with four words.
‘I love your laugh. x’
But that was twelve years ago. It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (© Tripadvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (© Georgina’s best friends) in bed with someone else.
So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something.
The only problem? He doesn’t seem to remember Georgina – at all…
This irresistible new book from Mhairi McFarlane is the perfect story to escape with. Compulsively readable, absolutely hilarious and deliciously romantic, you will not be able to put it down.

I will admit this is not my genre. I'm usually listening to distopian fiction or a psychological thriller of some sort, definitely bleaker fare than this. So, I can't make any comparisons. I also never listened to this author before and have no idea how this book stacks up against the rest.
However, all that aside, here's what I can say about this book. The story is truly touching. I both laughed out loud (a few times actually!), and cried. The characters have depth, and although it is a love story, that's really not the central theme. It's about loss, coming to terms with the past, and consequently, moving on and embracing the future.
It is written well. Really well. The humour is sharp, I actually cackled in a few places. Although the story is occasionally predictable, the rawness of some of the moments still caught me off guard.
Finally, the narration leaves nothing to be desired. This is the right balance between acting out the various characters and telling the story as a single person.
Well done!
Shockingly witty, touching and hilarious.
