Best Dragon Age Book I've Read Yet

No Dragon Age book is going to be a great work of art, but if you are a Dragon Age fan, I think it's worth a listen/read. As I've said on the other reviews for previous books, this rating is based on how valuable it is to a person who has played the Dragon Age games.

This one is my favorite yet because it gives more context to the character, Cole, and why he asks you to locate and assist Evangeline and Rhys in Dragon Age Inquisition. And why he can't be with them anymore. Also you find out just how tragic the origins are for the original Cole. (The human mage Cole, not the spirit rogue imitating him.)

Also the mage politics that lead to the rebellion which led to the disbanding of the Circle of Magi in Orlais, Fereldan and the Free Marches is explained in depth. It is mainly seen through Wynne, her son Rhys, Evangeline and Adrian's perspective. The main antagonist is leader of the Seekers, Lord Seeker Lambert Van Reeves who is on the cover of the book.

What is interesting about this book is the compassion displayed by the high ranking officials in the Chantry. For the first time within the timeline you find out that the right of tranquility can be reversed in this book and that the research was ordered by The Divine. You find out in Dragon Age Inquisition that the right of tranquility can be reversed as well, but in the book it was actually performed by a tranquil on himself by touching a demon/spirit. In DA: Inquisition, the right of tranquility was performed the same way someone acquires seeker abilities which is described by Cassandra. She describes that she spends a year in vigil, fasting and prayer, emptying herself of all emotion which is considered tranquility. Then they summon a spirit of faith to touch their mind.

I think that means that seekers are in fact mages and that everyone can acquire mage abilities if they were to do as the Seekers do. It would be interesting what ability classes are possible in future games depending on how tranquility was broken and what spirit broke it. This makes it more of a tragedy that all the tranquil were brutalized and murdered and their skulls used to make ocularum in the Dragon Age Inquisition game.

Cole 💖

As someone who played the games first, hearing Cole's backstory was an incredible experience. This story was heartwrenching, sweet, and definitely sheds some light on the main character, explaining certain game events as well. Rhys and Evangeline are rather cliché characters but the writing is so good, it's barely noticable. Also nice to see Wynne again.
