Publisher's Summary

Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help. While working on a biography of the late poet Lydia Brooke, she has uncovered information that has her convinced Lydia's suicide five years ago was really murder. As Duncan begins his investigation, another murder occurs closer to home. Now he finds himself frantically searching for clues in Lydia's complicated past to find the killer before he strikes again. Award-winning author Deborah Crombie has crafted a beautifully written, multilayered mystery that leaves you gasping with surprise. Jenny Sterlin's narration deftly creates an air of suspense while capturing every nuance of the language.

A mystery to the end

Good story... great mix of possible 'villains' to choose from...
I was surprised with the change in narrator. Ms Sterling did a pretty good job but I did find that many of the Cambridge characters sounded too similar.

Loved this book

Very well read and a good mystery story. I like the relationship between the 2 main characters. Very human

Inconsistent reading

As others have noted, the voice actor is inconsistent, especially with the male characters. Much prefer Michael Deehy. The story however was excellent, with sufficient details to enjoy learning about the characters as people instead of just plot movers. I don’t normally care for books with so many seemingly primary characters, but this makes it more interesting. Like a regular book, I’ve had to return to a previous chapter - and I’m sure a second listen will be just as interesting. Will pick up more of this author’s work.

Listen at 1.25! Good story, especially personally.

You must listen to this story at 1.25, or it will drive you crazy! Otherwise, the story is good, and there are some shocking personal twists. For those who don't understand poetry, let Gemma explain it to you.

No more books by this narrator for me

I enjoyed the story but absolutely hated the narrator. Another review referred to it being an imitation of a Noel Coward play - and I thoroughly agree. I'll skip all the books that she narrates.

Narrator left something to be desired

When I lost the ability to hear Gemma and Kincade’s voice I lost my ability to let myself get immersed in the story line. Very disappointed this time.

Can’t finish it

This is my second go at this book. I’m struggling. If I try again and get through it I may adjust the rating.

Read only because it was next in the series

I found it difficult to believe that it was written by the same author as the first 4 in the series. The narrator spoiled it.

difficult to listen to

Even listening at 1.25x (thanks to another reviewer for the suggestion), the narrator's unpleasant drawl made this a difficult listen. The relationship between Duncan and Gemma is problematic too, but the poor narration means I won't listen to any more in this series.
