The first novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Roman series. It is 42 AD, and Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. Publisher's Summary
Based on real historical events.
A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.
A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.
A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Arminius
This was my fist Ben Kane novel and man did I enjoy it. My only small critique is that I wish it showed Arminius point of view more. I'd type more but I'm jumping into book 2 right now, Hunting The Eagles, here I come.

A Great Surprise!
Very authentic, but still full of life. Real historical characters, mixed in with, the author's characters, works great! Narrator was perfect, as well!

This is as close to this kind of war as I would ever wish
Well written, well read, and setting the sides as both brave and heroic from each cultures point of view. You can’t bring civilization to barbarians without force and you can’t stay free if aren’t willing to use force. The results of this conflict are still evident today. Who really won the best outcome for their future - who can tell?

Over 1000 Audible books, my first Ben Kane… great !
How can anyone describe a man to man combat that goes on and on, without making one over saturated with details. Without repetition and circular description ?
Talent. You sir are a writer, I am a humble reader.

One of the Best Historical Fictions out there
I always heard great things about Ben Kane and finally gave him a shot. This being my first book by him and I waa blown away by his writing. His description of close combat is amazing. The writing is made even better by David Rintoul. He keeps you engaged and switch from something calm to the brutal combat is amazing. I felt like I was listening to a 40K book it was amazing.

Lacking in Character studies
I found myself swimming through this novel, never quite recovering to solid ground. I hope the next two novels in the series have better character skills.

Far away one of the best told stories I have ever listened to!
Great narration! Well researched! Well written!
The only caution- rather graphic gore. But it is a story of Roman vs German.
Well worth the listen.
