Publisher's Summary

All murder mysteries follow a simple set of rules. Grant McAllister, an author of crime fiction and professor of mathematics, once sat down and worked them all out.

But that was 30 years ago. Now he's living a life of seclusion on a quiet Mediterranean island - until Julia Hart, a sharp, ambitious editor, knocks on his door. His early work is being republished, and together the two of them must revisit those old stories: an author hiding from his past and an editor keen to understand it.

But as she reads, Julia is unsettled to realise that there are things in the stories that don't make sense. Intricate clues that seem to reference a real murder, one that's remained unsolved for 30 years.

Julia realises she's unwittingly entered a battle of wits where there can be only one winner. But Grant will soon realise that he underestimates her at his peril....

Amystery within a mystery.

A story of stories with hidden meanings depicting literary rules of writing detective fiction. This book is rather dated at first as it requires patience to listen until the final, unexpected revelation. Nothing is as it appears in the tale! The narrators pacing sets the emotional mood, calm which gives the tale a greater impact. Unusual novel requiring time to absorb, appreciate its cleverness.

Fantastic Narration!

The story is good- a mystery within a mystery. And it’s made even better by Emilia Fox’s wonderful narration. It’s worth it for that alone!!

enjoyable

This was a great one to listen to at work. The format was perfect for it. Each short story was interesting (though grim and... mean, for lack of a better word) and the overarching story was very clever. Lots of twists, red herrings and big moderately shocking (but in retrospect very logical) reveals.
It was cleverly written and hard to put down. The grim, mean ending perfectly fit the overall tone of the book. I'm not sure I'd read it again, but I'd definitely recommend it.

The narrator, Emilia Fox (who I watched on Silent Witness) was good, although her pronunciation of certain words were a bit distracting.
