Publisher's Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north in this “incredibly fun journey through fae lands and dark magic” (NPR), the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series.

“A darkly gorgeous fantasy that sparkles with snow and magic.”—Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, NPR, PopSugar, Polygon, The Globe and Mail, She Reads

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones—the most elusive of all faeries—lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart.

What the critics say

“An incredibly fun journey through fae lands and dark magic”—NPR

“A heartwarming spin on fantasy lore”POPSUGAR

“The world-building here is exquisite . . . and the characters are just as textured and richly drawn. This is the kind of forlorn, folkloric fantasy that remembers the old, blood-ribboned source material about sacrifices and stolen children, but adds a modern gloss.”—“Sizzling Hot Books for Cold Winter Days,” The New York Times Book Review

Excellent everything!

I absolutely loved this book. I’ve read it before, but I decided to re-read it by listening to the audiobook before the sequel comes out.

Ell Potter has to be one of the best narrators I’ve ever listened to! Her intonation, voices, accents, and rhythm brought the story to life like it was a technicolor painting. I finished the audiobook ready to rewind it and listen to it again.

As for the book itself, WOW. It’s hard to find books that are cleverly written these days. The journal style and voice of this character was so unique and enjoyable. Plus, the story itself was so compelling and unpredictable, I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what would happen next. I can’t wait for the sequel and for Heather Fawcett to write more adult fiction so I can devour it. Love, love, love!

So cozy

This was such an easy listen, there’s a resemblance of a plot but mostly the story followed our main character and her growth. Would be such a lovely book for a cozy holiday read.

Stayed engaged the whole time

Interesting world building, good characters, and a mature adult main character.
Many fantasy series feature female MCs who are 18 or less, so it’s lovely to find an older MC that I can relate to.
It’s Roma tic, but not steamy, so anyone looking for bridgerton-risqué romance may not find what they are looking for.
I would recommend this book to readers of this genre!

Cheery, Light and Cozy. Leaves you wanting more!

I enjoyed listening to this book so very much! The narration was spot on in every way. It felt as though I were there with the characters throughout all their adventures. I can't wait for the second book to come out! If you want a book to cozy up with over a weekend this is it. :)

Personally this is one of my faborite audiobooks. the story is amazing and I absolutely love the performance. Emily is such a unique character and honestly I love love LOVE how clever she is. watching her learn to let others in and stumble with social interactions is so endearing and relatable to me, and the way all the fae beings are written is SO compelling and honestly the whole series is so absolutely enchanting i cant reccomend it enough

A very enjoyable fantasy!

This was a solid fantasy story that I enjoyed immensely. I love that the setting was in the 1900’s and that the faeries were a more historic portrayal of them.

I really enjoyed the fact that the romance didn’t overpower the plot, that we got a cozy fantasy book.

I love the narrators, they made Emily and Wendel really come to life! Well done to both the author and narrators!

Was quite boring

I found the main character insufferable. And the enemy’s to lovers was not believable, there was no build up to them growing closer nor did the author narrate in their thoughts
