Publisher's Summary
These are the qualities that mark people who excel in life, whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. Lack of emotional intelligence can sabotage the intellect and ruin careers. Perhaps the greatest toll is on children, for whom risks include depression, eating disorders, unwanted pregnancies, aggressiveness, and crime. But the news is hopeful. Emotional intelligence is not fixed at birth, and the author shows how its vital qualities can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. And because the emotional lessons a child learns actually sculpt the brain's circuitry, he provides guidance as to how parents and schools can best use this window of opportunity in childhood. The message of this eye-opening program is one we must take to heart: the true "bell-curve" for a democracy must measure emotional intelligence.
What the critics say
"An intriguing and practical guide to emotional mastery." (Publishers Weekly)
"Excellent research, clear writing, and a fluid abridgment will please both the casual and serious student of how people combine emotions and thinking in daily functioning." (AudioFile)

More appropriate for someone interested in psych
I made a wrong choice with this book. Let me tell you why I didn't care for it and why you might.
****Why I didn't like this book****
I was looking for a more tactical book. Something that provides me with actionable advice on how to increase my own EQ and possible, how to coach other to do the same (relevant to my job as a manager). I have had my EQ assessed and was looking for deeper information about the aspects measured and actionable advice about how to bolster my weak areas and leverage my strong areas. This book does not provide that type of information.
****Who might enjoy this book****
People who are more interested in learning about the psychological studies behind the scenes of EQ might find this book more to their liking. If you're interested in answering questions like "What is EQ?" and "How was EQ developed" and "Does research show that EQ is important to success?" then this book is probably for you. That said, you could probably answer those questions by reading a wikipedia article if you don't have a need to get deep into the subject matter.

Good But Surpassed By Others
I'm sure his work was groundbreaking, but authors such as Tal Ben-Shahar and Jonathan Haight have written works much fresher and offer more nuianced insights.

Interesting... but useless
This book was fairly interesting but rather useless... for example, it should tell you practical ways to improve your emotional intelligence. The main message of this book is "emotional intelligence is important", that's it

Missing major parts of the book
I got this book as part of my free trial, and I chose it because I have a hard copy at home and have been struggling to get through it. I thought listening to it narrated would be better… And it was, except it was missing major portions of the book. Overall, this experience definitely didn’t make me the biggest fan of audible.

Read-able Meta-Analysis on Emotional Intelligence
What made the experience of listening to Emotional Intelligence the most enjoyable?
I found the research on the subject to be very insightful, profound, and highly relatable.
What did you like best about this story?
I really enjoyed hearing about how charter schools and public school systems can practically steward education practices that enhance emotional intelligence.
What does Daniel Goleman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I found Goleman's narration to be great for this format. His reading filled with enthusiasm and he wasn't a "try hard" in reading his own book. I found his narration style to enhance the content in a appropriate fashion that didn't feel too much like a car salesman.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did want too, I found that it was enthralling and also practical to my own life. It's one I will listen to again and take notes on with a cup of tea.
Any additional comments?
I will definitely purchase the paper version of this book for my library at some point to digest and incorporate the content further

Didn’t include all the writing in the book
The audible version left out a lot of paragraphs in the book. I wish it had more of the authors information in the book and not abridged. The information it did have however was excellent.

Parents required reading.
When I was a kid if one went to a psychotherapist it was thought that one was crazy. Now with a generally more enlightened context with conflict resolution and the dynamic of the power struggle in relationships the book offends a refreshing outlook. I have had the book for ten years or more. I decided to have the author read it to me and he did an excellent job.

Good for Understanding, but not Practice
I felt the book was helpful to better understand what EI is, but not as useful for practicing new EI skills.
