Publisher's Summary

In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader. But Hekat was not born to be a slave. For her, a different path has been chosen. It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her God, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak. This is the story of Hekat, slave to no man.

The story was miserable

I read/listen to be entertained. This story offered no entertainment. I'm not saying it is bad, and I love every grim dark book I've ever read, but this was just misery, start to finish. Not sure I'll continue with this series. Even if I can empathize with some of the characters and how it forces them to act, I struggle to find any that I could actually like. Other books protagonists in the grim dark genre are typically not likeable or moral, but they have at least something redeeming I can enjoy. This story was of people with zero redeeming qualities, not humorous thoughts, not interesting view points. Possibly Vodka was an interesting, but weak character. The world is very interesting however, the backstory, the problems they are facing, and that would be the only reason I keep going with this series, I want to know what happens. The way the first book ends though, I can't imagine how it could even maintain a the level of palatability that it currently had, which was already extremely low. I want to use the word "worst", but I can't, it's not poorly written at all. The world and descriptions make me feel right there with the characters. I can't use "worst". My least enjoyed book I can remember reading, ever in my life.
