English Literature in the Sixteenth Century is an invigorating overview of English literature from the Norman Conquest through the mid-seventeenth century from one of the greatest public intellectuals of the modern age. Challenging, but so worthwhile.
This text is classic CS Lewis – simply profound and profoundly simple. By simple, I mean clear – written with extraordinary clarity and wit. Profound, because it is a most searching study of 16th-century poetry and prose, much of it unfamiliar to most of us, but in Lewis’s hands rendered so interesting that I want to read it now for myself. I’ve rated the performance so highly because the readers lively presentation is so compelling. This will not be for everyone, but it will be for many more than on might have thought by its title.
