À propos de cet audio

Detective Superintendent MacNeice is returning from a pilgrimage to his wife's grave when he's called to a crime scene of singular and disturbing beauty. A young woman in evening dress lies gracefully posed on the floor of a pristine summer cottage so that the finger of one hand regularly interrupts the needle arm of a phonograph playing Schubert's Piano Trio. The only visible mark on her is the bruise under her chin, which MacNeice recognizes: It is the mark that distinguishes dedicated violinists, the same mark that once graced his wife. The murder is both ingenious and horrific and soon entangles MacNeice and his team in Eastern Europe's ancient grievances.

Erasing Memory is a thrilling and assured debut that kicks off an exciting new crime series from Scott Thornley.

This Scott Thornley Mystery is wide-reaching.. with the investigation in fictional Dundurn, Ontario eventually targeting Eastern European geopolitics & KGB Assassins. The Detective Superintendent MacNeice character is interesting enough (a near-autistic obsessive observer grieving the death of his wife), but he never clicked with me. Similarly, the plot is well-conceived but failed to grab my attention: this book generally droned on in the background while I did other things.

Doubtless, noticeably "average" narration contributed to my "Meh" impression of the book. Don't get me wrong, reader Richard Poe is a solid professional with regards to diction, timbre, and cadence - but I found his voice-acting uninspired and he delivers a somewhat monotonous performance.

Altogether, 'Erasing Memory' was a 5/10-star effort. It wasn't a total waste of time as a free selection, but paying a Credit for it would be hard to justify.

[Note: Thornley shoehorns in a romantic attraction between MacNeice and pretty protégé detective 'Sergeant Azziz' for some reason (which doesn't fit the characters AT ALL) .. and then writes it hamfistedly]
