Publisher's Summary

Producer, editor, and writer behind the highly addictive, informative, and popular YouTube channel The Nerdwriter, Evan Puschak presents “a brilliant, wide-ranging essay collection that explores meaning and how we make it with the thoughtfulness and open-hearted generosity that have long been hallmarks of Puschak’s writing” (John Green, New York Times bestselling author).

As YouTube’s The Nerdwriter, Evan Puschak plays the polymath, posing questions and providing answers across a wide range of fields—from the power of a split diopter shot in Toy Story 4 to the political dangers of schadenfreude. Now, he brings that same insatiable curiosity and striking wit to this engaging and unputdownable essay collection.

Perfect for fans of Trick Mirror and the writing of John Hodgman and Chuck Klosterman, Escape into Meaning is “a passionate, perceptive” (Hua Hsu, author of Stay True) compendium of fascinating insights into obsession. Whether you’re interested in the philosophy of Jerry Seinfeld or how Clark Kent is the real hero, there’s something for everyone in this effervescent collection.

Wimsical and Profound

This will be a book I continue to go back to for the rest of my life. I intend to buy the hard cover as well.

I have been a fan of nerdwriter for a long time. The intellectual, logical and introspective scripts helped connect me to movies and stories; most of whom I had never seen or heard of before.

This book helped me see my own life and journey with a fresh perspective. Challenging my status quo and providing me much needed time to ponder my own choices. As I write this I'm 26, a few years from Evan's 33. I am hopeful I can look back on this book in 7 years and be proud of the friends I've made along the way, the comics and comedians I've fallen in love with, the fantasies I've lost myself in.

Thank you Even.

Outstandingly Communicative

A tremendous love letter to the world, what it could be, and many of the interesting people it holds. Evan I hope you know you have become the Emerson of many people, or at least me. The way you can take the vague amorphous ideas and convictions we have and solidify them into words is a great gift. Giving us a chance to borrow the more eloquent words of an author when trying to convey our own feelings on a matter. 10/10

Glad I Stuck With It

I am a big Nerdwriter fan and was thrilled when I found out Evan had written a book and would be narrating it himself. He really delivers on what you would expect from the high quality of his videos and this book was insightful from beginning to end. I did have a few moments where I just wasn't into it because it felt like some of these 45 minute chapters were saying things that Evan normally says in a 15 minute video. But in the end I recognize that it was worth my patience to go along on the journey and the destination never did disappoint. The chapter on friendship brought a tear to my eye but I enjoyed the essay on Jerry Seinfeld the most. I would recommend.

10/10

The first essay of this book is changing me in the same way Emerson changed Evan. If you want to learn more about the condition of being a human, like nerdwriter videos, or just want to listen to some great writing, this is the book for you!
