Story
Young Tom French was found dead, lying in a marsh on the Norfolk coast, with his head bashed in and his binoculars still around his neck. One of the best birders in England, Tom had put the village of Rushy on the birdwatching map. Everyone liked him. Or did they? George Palmer-Jones, an elderly birdwatcher who decided quietly to look into the brutal crime, discovered mixed feelings aplenty. Still, he remained baffled by a deed that could have been motivated by thwarted love, pure envy, or something else altogether.

Publisher's Summary
When Constable Evan Evans and his new fiancée decide to travel south from home in Llanfair, Wales, to visit his mother in Swansea, they're not expecting the disturbing news that greets them on their arrival: the young thug convicted of murdering Evan's father several years earlier is suspected of murder once again. Tried as a juvenile for Evan's father's death, Tony Mancini only served four years in prison. Now he's been accused of killing Alison Turnbull, a local teen and the daughter of Mancini's boss. But when Evan goes to meet the boy face-to-face, he's surprised to find not the stone-cold killer he expected but a scared young man who swears his innocence.
Against his own wishes, and ignoring his superiors, Evan believes the boy's claim of innocence and decides to investigate, at potential peril to his career. But is his instinct correct, or is Mancini just trying to save himself? And how will he reconcile his actions with his memory of his father's murder, which has haunted him for so long? Evan Evans is up to the challenge, to be sure, and faces it all with characteristic good humor and the Welsh charm that sets Rhys Bowen's successful cozy series apart.

Unnecessary language
Unfortunately I found myself needing to stop partway through the book. I have so enjoyed this series but found the need for using foul language completely unnecessary and offputting. The characters in storyline have been great but the author obviously has felt the need to add Inferred sexual content and F bombs to sell copy? It really did not need to happen but unfortunately it has and so I am no longer a participant. Makes me sad

New depths
This installment is a very worthy and intimate look at Evan's personal life and character. It's the raison d'etre for who Evans is as a man and an officer. It also brings new depth to his fiancée's character and flavor to their relationship. Nicely done!
P.S. Per the earlier reviewer complaint on language: it was extremely limited and situational, and it clearly was not the modus operandi of the main characters.

Evan only knows
I am sure the book is as good as the others in the series are. The thought of killing all of the sheep simply distresses me so I’m not going to read anymore. I think I’m only up to chapter 2 and that’s enough.

Very predictable
As another reviewer mentioned you can predict the killer pretty quickly and yet they are never even hinted at as a suspect! Just didn't seem realistic. You can skip this one if you're reading through the series.

You'll think you know where it's going......
And you'll be right. Totally predictable. I'm a great fan of this series but I knew from the jump where this was going. I thought about abandoning the book several times because there really was no point in spending time on a story so obvious. Even the Alzheimer's bit. I kept going hoping for a surprise, but really more to validate my review. So, unless you want to read it to see how the regular characters develop (spoiler: not much), I'd recommend skipping this one. It takes place in South Wales, which is why I made the beach association. This is nit-picky but the cover art would have made more sense without the sheep. I get the angel allusion but, frankly, we know it can't refer to Evan Evans even though his name is on the pedestal. And it looks like it's been erected on a beach. I normally purchase Rhys Bowen's books three at a time, but I'll proceed with caution from here, hoping the life of Constable Evan Evans recovers it's usual charm with the next next installment.

Best Constable Evans Book Yet
This was by far my favorite of this series. It has great depth of character and storyline. I teared up, I laughed, and I felt along with the characters. Masterfully done!

Bronwen the new detective
I was so frustrated that Evan couldn't stop being a cop while on vacation. It was too much., I did however enjoy Bronwen undercover.

Enjoyable series
I did skip book 6 because I get tired of authors making fun of church going people and then their views on politics and uplifting things like Druidism. So I saved myself the headache. But I’m on to book 8 now.

A big fan of Constable Evans, but..
I’ve listened to all the previous audiobooks in this series and enjoyed them immensely. And I enjoyed this one, too - but a bit less so. The performance was on par, but the story, in my opinion, wasn’t up to snuff. Before the story was halfway through I was sure I knew who the culprit was, and unfortunately I was correct. This storyline was just too predictable. Hoping for more “mystery” from the next one!
