Publisher's Summary

Detective Constable Evan Evans and his new bride, Bronwen, are settling into married life in their little cottage above the village of Llanfair when they meet the daughter of one of the village's newest families, a 16-year-old Pakistani girl named Jamila. Bronwen and Jamila are becoming good friends when Jamila finds out from her parents that they have arranged a marriage for her back in Pakistan. Evans tries to convince her family not to enforce the custom, arguing that Jamila is a normal Welsh teenager, but just as the tensions increase, the girl suddenly vanishes. Bronwen is distraught, but there's no trace of her.

At work, Evans is investigating the murder of a man shot to death through the open window of his home while eating breakfast. After the man's wife is jailed as a suspect, a second man is killed - and then a third - and Evans and his team are on the hunt for a serial killer. But they can't seem to find any connections between the three men....

In the surprising climax of Edgar Award finalist Rhys Bowen's 10th Constable Evans mystery, Evans risks everything to solve the murders and discover what happened to Jamila. All in all, the novel is a triumph for fans of Bowen's acclaimed Evans series and a wonderful discovery for new listeners.

Wonderful as usual!!!

I just LOVE Constable Evans. Or should I say Detective Constable? I only wish there were a lot more of this series.

Should’ve stopped at 9

I just binge-listened to the entire series over the course of a handful of days and this book is awful and tarnishes the entire series simply bc it’s the last book and definitely the most memorable. It’s a Heinz 57 of delicate, social trigger-topics addressed as insensitively as possible. The extreme racial stereotyping is the worst and is absolutely inexcusable. And, just when you think it can’t possibly get more offensive, it does.

I know you’ll still listen to the book after reading this bc it’s impossible to believe that this could be true after having listened to 9 fun books, and I can’t fault you for that - if I were you, I probably wouldn’t believe me, either, since it’s such a drastic departure from the tone & content of the previous books in the series. Just remember that I told you so!

Weird Politics

The politics of this book troubled me. I usually find Rhys Bowen's books to be a pleasant diversion, but I really struggled with the tired, vaguely racist trope of the angry Muslim man. The portrayal wasn't nuanced at all.

Love Constable Evans

This was not my favorite of the books. I miss the stories of the village and Bronwen. For the last book in the series I feel we are left with so much more that could be written.

Love this!

Great storyline captivating so many different social issues and cultural sensitivities were included in this book… really interesting how they affected the investigation process. Most troublesome is the Bragg character bc I find a lot of the ‘type’.

Glad series is over

This book and previous one in series lacked a lot. I always loved the information about Wales but these two had little of that.

Disappointed in the storyline

I’m kind of surprised about the whole Muslim extremist angle. Seems unnecessary and fairly racist.

Resigned.

Couldn't put it down. Well done. A unique and interesting twist to the plot, that's the whole point, isn't it?

Disgusted by this book; Encourages abuse of woman.

Three woman physically and emotionally abused; coercive control, forced miscarriages, isolation from friends and family, rape, financial abuse. Evan goes in confidence to a woman’s shelter promising to keep the secrets and women there safe. Then without even a thought to his promise and what these women have been though—after the law has completely failed them and they have no where to go—he arrests them and violates the safety of these women he promised to keep safe. I’m absolutely disgusted. I will never read this series again. And I’m even debating cutting off all Ryhs Bowen despite my love of her Royal Spyness.
