Publisher's Summary
When Constable Evan Evans is persuaded to join the local male choir for the upcoming eisteddfod (cultural festival), he doesn't think the addition of his mediocre voice will do them much good. In spite of all the effort that choirmaster Mostyn Phillips puts in to the choir, it is not exactly first class. Hope arrives in the form of world-renowned tenor Ifor Llewelyn, come home to Llanfair to rest, on doctor's orders.
Llewelyn immediately sets about renewing old friendships, and Mostyn even persuades him to sing with the choir. But Ifor isn't in Llanfair long before the residents decide that his presence is a mixed blessing. Noisy fights between Ifor and his wife, a threatening stranger, and Ifor's own warped sense of humor make life in Llanfair increasingly tense. When he announces that he is planning to write his memoir, telling all about his numerous relationships with famous and infamous women, he jokes that some people won't be happy. But is someone unhappy enough to commit murder to stop him? While tracking down a dangerous killer, Constable Evans also manages to navigate the treacherous waters of neighborhood rivalries, lusty barmaids, and local gossip.
With her third book in this acclaimed series, Rhys Bowen offers another pause-resisting tale of small-town mayhem and murder in Evanly Choirs.

Very Enjoyable Series
The "Evans" series is very enjoyable. I have read all the books written by Rhys Bowen. The characters are fun and believable. The narrator is wonderful, with a fabulous ability to create personalities in the story. I would recommend anyone of the many books in the Bowen catalogue of books.

Third instalment in the Constable Evans series
Absolutely love this book and the other two available on Audible - the narrator is fantastic! He embodies all of the characters so well and at times I find I am laughing aloud with the characters. Good little mysteries as well, suitable for most ages. Come on Audible, please arrange to make the rest of the series available!!

Nice, Cute Mystery
I like this series a lot, I hope that the remaining books get released as audiobooks in the future.
I love the Welsh setting. I would love to visit Wales one day, and it makes me want to visit all the more (even despise the apparent hatred of tourists haha!)
Evan is a great character, although his problems with the women in his life are frustrating, because they are all his fault! Just communicate , you dope! I also wish that it wasn't constantly pointed out how Betsy's cleavage draws the eyes of every man in the room, but oh well.
Great for an armchair mystery

a favorite series
There is something about Constable Evan Evans and the townspeople in Llanfair than I find charming. This was the first mystery series written by the author who uses the pseudonym of Rhys Bowen. Constable Evans (aka Evans the law) is still having women trouble. There seems to be a severe shortage of single young men in Llanfair. In this "episode", the Powell's lease their home for the summer to a famous Welsh operatic tenor who, frankly, wrecks havoc in the village, upsetting many of the villagers, including Evan Evans. When he is killed there are no shortage of suspects. Evan Evans proves yet again that, though he is a mere constable, he was born to be a detective.
I like the sound of the narrator's voice. When he speaks Welsh, it is lovely (though I have no idea if his pronunciation is correct).

Good for escape to wilds of wales
Perfect for not-scary, fun (if not complex) characters with Welsh accents. Not as much laughing as Her Royal Spyness, yet smiles of amusement frequently.
Why are next books in series not available?

A nice cozy mystery
The Evans series is great for a break from more intense reading. Evan is a delightful character. It is also nice to have a little trip to Wales. The bloodshed is minimal and character development is paramount.
I recommend!

Easy listening for those who are easy to please
I have always been partial to a Welsh accent and Roger Clark ticks all the boxes for me in both performance and accent. I was expecting a good story, the odd red herring and a lovely plot twist and got all 3.
I have been a big fan of the Royal Spyness Mystery series for many years and have only now ventured into the realm of Evan Evans. For anyone looking for an easy listen and a bit of a challenge to work out whodunnit then go ahead and listen.

Slower start than the other one
This one picks up nicely, but the start was awkward. After a prelude of a young woman coming to the village to look for an old love, the story grinds to a “setting the scene by bits in a bar” halt. There are two problems with this. It’s boring and doesn’t grab or help us bond with the story, and after each person speaks, the narrator drops his voice to almost a whisper on every tagline. So it’s like this: A sentence by one person followed by a whispered tagline of who said it. A sentence by another person followed by another whispered.tagline of who said it. And this goes on between several people for a long time. Play this part at a faster speed, and then enjoy the rest of the relaxed small-village tale unfold. One of the things I enjoyed is how Evan and Watkins get along. It’s refreshing that here is no antagonism between them. I wish Evan would grow a spine regarding manipulative women.

Good but not Bowen's best work
I enjoyed this little mystery, that unfolds in Wales, with the good-hearted Constable Evan Evans at work doing what he does best--using his knowledge of local people and his keen intuitions to solve the murder the higher-ups cannot. It's also fun to get a sense of the local Welsh names and customs.
This short series precedes the "Royal Spyness" stories, where I think Rhys Bowen has created a more engaging set of characters. But they are a pleasant listen in their way. I thought this one was a little flat (perhaps due to the narration as much as the story), and it was a bit choppy in getting all the characters and clues in place. But it has mostly well-drawn characters, and the ending was not obvious throughout the story. It is interesting to put these two series side by side to see Bowen's development as an author, and a good read, if you are not seeking anything too flashy.
This is a good cozy mystery--certainly worth a listen. But the quality of the recording is not as good as one might wish, and that detracts from what is less than stellar narration. I guess what this book was missing was anything that made it "pop" (as they say about colors and styles). Get it, enjoy it, just know it's more like a cup of herbal tea than an exciting cocktail.
One good thing about this series--they can be read out of order (which I did, years ago) with no real loss of continuity.
