Every Note Played will grip and gut you.”The Boston Globe

From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive.

An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago.

Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce.

He knows his left arm will go next.

Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralyzed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it.

When Richard becomes increasingly paralyzed and is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late.

Poignant and powerful, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.

The story is simply raw and beautiful and sad but the narration takes it to the next level.

This is a rare beautiful book that takes you inside two worlds that shouldn’t intersect but do; ALS and the life of a classical pianist. The people are very real, flawed, facing heartbreaking decisions. You know where the book will end up in one sense but the tension between the characters keeps you wondering whether they will survive emotionally too. The performances are just superb. I will definitely listen to this one time and again.

Amazing book

As usual, Lisa Genova comes across with a story that puts the reader in that place. You feel the pain, the frustration, and the joy of life. The research that goes into her work is amazing. I wait for her novels. #Audible 1

Lisa Genova... another amazing story that takes you INTO the story. Beautifully read in character by the actors. I listened to this on a road trip with my 14 year old son, before long he had put his game aside and was listening along with me, asking to listen to more each time we got back in the car and the conversations we had.... priceless. Have your Kleenex ready and get r day to expand your heart and understanding. #Audible1

What a wonderful listen and lessons in LIVING and letting go with ALS

Oh my goodness! Lisa Genova’s writing, descriptions and the words that come to life are so incredibly powerful. There is not one experience Lisa describes in this book of Richard or his loved ones that was not spot on! I work with ALS clients. I’ve never met one I didn’t love! The devastating trajectory of this disease and how it slowly robs people of function, independence and hope is to heartbreaking to watch. Praying a cure is found.
