Born in California in 1926, Ruth Asawa grew from a farmer's daughter to a celebrated sculptor. She survived adolescence in the World War II Japanese-American internment camps and attended the groundbreaking art school at Black Mountain College. Asawa then went on to develop her signature hanging-wire sculptures, create iconic urban installations, revolutionize arts education in her adopted hometown of San Francisco, fight through lupus, and defy convention to nurture a multiracial family.

An total inspiration

This book was not just a story, but a total experience of revelation and inspiration. This woman was flawless, and relentless, and there was no stopping her from beginning to end. If I ever feel sorry for myself, I’ll remember Ruth Asawa and just keep going. I’ll listen to this book over and over. Ruth’s story is remarkable. It was hard to hear about the terrible discrimination and humiliation the American/Japanese had to suffer in war time, for NO GOOD REASON, and there can never be enough apology from the government for their inhumane treatment. But Ruth took everything in her stride,never complained and was driven by her endless creative ideas and talent. I’m glad she met the right people who were close to her and supported her work and ideas. Special people appreciated her. Now her work and spirit is enduring, and she’ll always be remembered. I loved this book- the writing, the narration was superb, and couldn’t wait to hear it every day. Highly recommend
