Publisher's Summary

Felix Pink is retired. Widowed for more than a decade and a painfully literal thinker, he has led a life of routine and is, not unhappily, waiting to die a hopefully boring death. He occupies himself volunteering as an Exiteer - someone who sits with terminally ill people as they die by suicide, assisting with logistics and lending moral support, then removing the evidence so that family and friends are not implicated in the death. When Felix lets himself into Number 3 Black Lane, he’s there to perform an act of kindness and charity: to keep a dying man company as he takes his final breath.

But just 15 minutes later, Felix is on the run from the police - after making the biggest mistake of his life. Now his routine world is turned upside down as he tries to discover whether what went wrong was a simple mistake - or deliberate, a murder.

With a novel that is part murder-mystery, part coming-of-old-age story - however short that future may be - Belinda Bauer continues to redefine the boundaries of crime fiction. With the compassion and dark humor of Jonas Jonasson and the twisted thriller plotting of Rear Window, Exit is a novel listeners will not soon forget.

Fastest I've ever moved through an audio book

Such a great story. i loved it from beginning to end. Had all the emotions. it's been a while since I missed my book during the day and looked forward to diving in at evening, but I really missed it when I wasn't listening.

An outstanding novel and recording

I wasn’t sure what this would be like. It’s terribly English - and that’s a great thing. The story, characters and narration are 5 star. Funny, sad, poignant and clever.

Slow going

This book got plodding after the first few chapters. The joy was all in the narrator who was wonderful.

Witty dialogue, surprising plot, hidden depths

I loved every minute of this audiobook. I usually loathe professional narrators, but Rupert Degas is outstanding. He teased every last ounce of humour, pathos, and meaning out of every line. I bought the book after reading a good review and had no idea it was considered a thriller until after I read it! I just thought it was a cracking good work of fiction that grabbed me right from the opening sentence. I'm not an easy reader to please but, honestly, Belinda Bauer had me laughing, crying, and thoroughly enchanted. Never a dull moment. So many surprising twists, brilliant turns of phrase, and small moments of human kindness. I didn't want it to end.

Outstanding

I received this book for Mother's Day. and finished it in a day. Contemplating retirement long after my peers who made better life decisions , I think about the future. Is this really my last sofa? Last car? Last chance? Am I destined to become a cliche? . Hell no. With insight , intelligence and hilarity , Exit shook me by the shoulders. Snap out of it! ..Last sofa..probably ..I hate sofas ..last car .assuredly...last chance...never.

A delightful book

While this story involves murder and criminal activity, it has an unexpected cast of characters and a delightfully comic tone at times. Empathy and warmth are at the heart of the book. And the resolution of the central crime is quite unexpected!
The performance is marvellous. Rupert Degas wonderfully captures the voices of the key players in this tale.

Funny and engaging

In spite of the fact that this is murder mystery, it is not the typical crime novel. It’s actually quite funny and the characters are wonderful. I have come to love Bauer’s books for their originality and will continue to look for her upcoming works.

Clever, darkly comic

This clever, darkly comic murder mystery is perfectly paced. Characters are adequately developed and come alive with excellent narration. Very enjoyable listen.

Didnt see that coming

i didnt remember pre-ordering this book so surprise to me when i saw it in my library. kinda wishing i didnt spend a credit on this. the narrator does different voices very well. i just couldnt follow at times to what he was talking about. the first female in the story i hated. her personality clashes with her career choice. but only good thing, the killer, you never saw that coming.

No man's land

There might have been a better book here on end of life assisted suicides with more poignant analysis of the choices and repercussions on the people involved.
There might have been a better book that ignored some of that seriousness and went for a more cutting black humor (think Martin McDonough)
There might have been a late life romance to spur along our protagonist

This book does none of that and plods along with really, really not funny British farce comedy.

I hated it.

Great mystery and review of human foibles.

Great book! Made me laugh out loud, made me cry, made me think. Great plot, you won't figure out who did it ... but you'll think you had at least 3 times.

Sympathetic study on death with dignity

With this book, I discovered Belinda Bauer and will be looking for her other titles. Surprising plot twists and loveable characters in a thoroughly enjoyable read. Rupert Degas's voice characterizations are brilliant. Highly recommend!
