Long, but worth it
The performance was fine, with the unideal but extremely typical issues of linguistic hiccoughs when a story makes use of too many different (real-world) languages.
Otherwise, this has been the most engaging sci-fi novel I've encountered this year (though I admittedly don't usually go for sci-fi). It is more importantly the first novel I've ever encountered to use metanarrative commentary in a meaningful way with little to no self-gratifying "aren't stories *so* important to personhood?" type thematics (and I have encountered so many novels that attempt to make metamarrative commentary about the narrative nature of the novel that I'd all but given up on this topic ever being broached with any elegance whatsoever).
I would still prefer that the author focus on his Baru Cormorant series though. :P
