From the New York Times best-selling author of An Altar in the World, Barbara Brown Taylor’s Learning to Walk in the Dark provides a way to find spirituality in those times when we don’t have all the answers. Taylor has become increasingly uncomfortable with our tendency to associate all that is good with lightness and all that is evil and dangerous with darkness. How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Millions of Christians have struggled with how to reconcile God's love and God's judgment: Has God created billions of people over thousands of years only to select a few to go to heaven and everyone else to suffer forever in hell? Is this acceptable to God? How is this "good news"? Author, pastor, and innovative teacher Rob Bell presents a deeply biblical vision for rediscovering a richer, grander, truer, and more spiritually satisfying way of understanding heaven, hell, God, Jesus, salvation, and repentance.

Story
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in the church. Not since the Reformation five centuries ago have so many Christians come together to ask whether the church is in sync with their deepest beliefs and commitments. These believers range from evangelicals to mainline Protestants to Catholics, and the person who best represents them is author and pastor Brian McLaren. In this much anticipated book, McLaren examines ten questions facing today's church - questions about how to articulate the faith itself, the nature of its authority, who God is....

Story
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

Publisher's Summary
This program is read by Brian D. McLaren
From the author of A New Kind of Christianity comes a bold proposal: only doubt can save the world and your faith.
"Will help you live fuller and breathe easier.” (Glennon Doyle)
Sixty-five million adults in the U.S. have dropped out of active church attendance and about 2.7 million more are leaving every year. Faith After Doubt is for the millions of people around the world who feel that their faith is falling apart.
Using his own story and the stories of a diverse group of struggling believers, Brian D. McLaren, a former pastor and now an author, speaker, and activist shows how old assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality. He proposes a four-stage model of faith development in which questions and doubt are not the enemy of faith, but rather a portal to a more mature and fruitful kind of faith.
The four stages - Simplicity, Complexity, Perplexity, and Harmony - offer a path forward that can help sincere and thoughtful people leave behind unnecessary baggage and intensify their commitment to what matters most.

Love wins
Journeys of faith are unique, but there's so much we all share, doubts being one of them. From his own life experiences and personal encounters, the author brings reassurance that doubt can be an engine of spiritual growth, leading us to live more fully in the flow of God's love.
My favourite quote:
"I gradually came to see that the love of God, however God was understood or described, was not separate from the other loves of neighbor, self, and creation but was, in fact, the love I encountered and experienced in all of these other loves. Love for God and love from God were equally present in the love I gave and in the love I received in my relationships with neighbor, self, and my fellow creations. It was love all the way down, love all the way up, love all the way out, and love all the way in.

I feel seen, heard, and understood so deeply that I became emotional while reading this book. It is exactly what I needed to read as it gave me hope that I thought I’d never have again. I am so grateful for Brian’s vulnerability and compassion. This is one of those books that I will have to buy printed form so that I can highlight, sticky note, and re-read for the rest of my life.

More hopeful, less certain
So much of this book feels as though Brian wrote it to, for, & about me. Meaning it is so personal, so relatable, it’s uncomfortable & reassuring. Is that possible?
I finished this book more hopeful and less certain and I think that might be the best compliment I can give Brian for his work.
It is full of grace, kindness, honesty, clarity, & curiosity. It is questions for your questions. Directions yes, instructions no.
I bought the kindle version and I’ll probably buy the written one as well so I can write in it.
The afterword is worth the whole book by itself.
Thanks BML

Like cold water to a thirsty soul
This book is truly a gift. It so resonates with my journey…deeply. I absolutely love the way Brian ends the book by flattening his four stage concept in terms of valuing each stage as capable of profound meaning and being marked by the only thing that matters… Faith expressing itself through love.
It is well worth the listen for anyone who has ever thought even for a split second that they have run across something in their belief system that is questionable.
The book will be a difficult book to listen to by anyone who believes that they have all the answers.
However, for the Bereans out there who Luke wrote about… those who search the Scriptures daily to see if all that Paul said was (and the Bible says is) true / factual because they were of more noble character, for you, the book will be a joy.

In a time of pandemic and retirement, I find myself much more reflective than ever before. Thank you Brian, for helping me think through some hard thoughts and feelings. It is nice to know I am not alone and that it's OK to have more questions than answers. Also, doubt doesn't have to result in rejection but can move me forward to being more loving and accepting. I will seek to find my genuine.

I'd recommend to everyone!
Many religions and worldly ways of thinking teach us that doubt is a kind of weakness or fault. This book teaches the opposite: That true faith is not real unless it utilizes doubt.
If you come from a very traditional and restrictive background, I recommend this book. If you have left your old beliefs behind and need affrimation for leaving them there, I recommend this book. If you are curious about how Humanity can keep itself from self-destructing, I recommend this book!
If you are doubting and questioning, you are not broken or evil. You are being called to a more authentic and fulfilling life. This book will encourage you!

Clarity for my brain scribbles
I've been deconstructing for the past few years, reading so many authors and painfully walking this path that feels like a death to my Christian identity. I really needed clarity and permission to not have to "land" anywhere. I can live in my questions, but also live in a space of love, which is actually the impetus that started this journey. All my genuine self ever wanted was to walk in love, BE love, and I feel more equipped to be that person with our having to justify myself to any gatekeeper. This book is a beautiful gift!
