Publisher's Summary

From the number one New York Times best-selling author comes a powerful, emotionally complex story of love, loss, the pain of the past - and the promise of the future.

Sometimes the greatest dream starts with the smallest element. A single cell joining with another. And then dividing. And just like that, the world changes.

Annie Harlow knows how lucky she is. The producer of a popular television cooking show, she loves her handsome husband and the beautiful Los Angeles home they share. And now she's pregnant with their first child. But in an instant, her life is shattered. And when Annie awakes from a yearlong coma, she discovers that time isn't the only thing she's lost.

Grieving and wounded, Annie retreats to her old family home in Switchback, Vermont, a maple farm generations old. There, surrounded by her free-spirited brother, their divorced mother, and four young nieces and nephews, Annie slowly emerges into a world she left behind years ago: the town where she grew up, the people she knew before, the high school boyfriend turned judge. And with the discovery of a cookbook her grandmother wrote in the distant past, Annie unearths an age-old mystery that might prove the salvation of the family farm.

Family Tree is the story of one woman's triumph over betrayal and how she eventually comes to terms with her past. It is the story of joys unrealized and opportunities regained. Complex, clear eyed, and big hearted, funny, sad, and wise, it is a novel to cherish and to remember.

Great plot and theme

At first I had difficulty settling into the narrator’s male voices. I ultimately fell in love with the plot and the characters, and I was able to adjust.

the first Susan Wiggs book I was able to put down

I absolutely love Susan Wiggs' work. usually I cannot stop listening to her stories. I get so wrapped up in the characters. This was the first one of her books I did not feel that way. While it was still a good book, I do not feel as if it was one of her best.

Very slow

This story line was slow and the narrator was not good at all. I had to quit, which I rarely do.

Almost Perfect

Overall, I loved the whole story. I didn't love the 'then' 'now' back and forth.

Not enjoying the narration

I'm not sure I'm going to finish this - it's very slow moving, which can be a good thing if it adds to the story line or character development. In this case there is no reason to belabor the details, plus the narrator's inflections go high and low at an uneven pace - either she's too loud or too soft. And I cringe when she speaks in the men's voices -- soooo unnaturally soft and mellow it makes it hard to imagine the men that would own these voices! This might be one of those books better read than listened to.
