Publisher's Summary

Some truths are dangerous, certain secrets best concealed, and one story never should have been written at all.

Being an unwanted twin in the Imperial line of succession, Farilane became a scholar, adventurer, and in a time when reading was once more forbidden—a book hunter. Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.

From the three-time New York Times best-selling author Michael J. Sullivan, Farilane is the second novel in the Rise and Fall trilogy. This latest set of stories sits snugly between Legends of the First Empire and the Riyria books (Revelations and Chronicles). With this tale, Michael continues his tradition of unlikely heroes who must rise to the call when history knocks, demanding to be let in. This series will conclude in the summer of 2023 with the release of Esrahaddon, the final piece in a narrative that began in 2008 and contains 19 full-length novels spread across four series.

wasn't expecting to cry my face off.

I got into this series(serireses?) starting with age of myth. I did not think I'd get to his book and be so invested that I end up sobbing, but that's where I ended up last night. Absolutely wonderful book.

Great Read

I really enjoyed this book. I do want to point out that this is the least stand alone book in the series. The motives of the characters and significance of the plot points, lack poignancy if read without the context of the earlier books.

Absolute masterpiece

This was easily my favorite book Michael has done. I love them all but I really connected with Farilane. To have such a intelligent and well written female lead character was such a treat.

a must read

This installment in the series is unique from all the others. It stands alone in every way. I never imagined I would fall in love with the series again, especially since I feel I never fell out of love with it in the first place. I would go as far to say that this is the best of MJS and I will definitely be re-reading/ listening to this novel. I encourage anyone reading it to start with the "Legends of the First Empire" series and move onto the rise and fall. I'm looking forward to the final book in the series and I only hope that this passion and mastery of the craft is continued on in Esrahddon. 11/10!

Absolutely loved it!

It was AMAZING!!!!! Michael this was the best one in the series. I had to pause and listen to the afterword in a day. 😂
If it is the first one of the series you’re going to read, STOP!!!! Go to the beginning - either from legends of the first empire or even the release order - read those learn the stories and know the characters. It won’t have the same impact.
Tim’s performance is implacable as always!

Amazing!!

I have loved every step of the journey o have taken with Michael’s characters. I have listened to every book, impeccable narrating, and have fallen in love with characters new and old. This one though….this one ranks very high on my list of his novels.

A return to a great story

I have listened to all of the Riyria and Legends of the First Empire books and loved them. The first book in this series felt rushed and weak but this one returns more to the quality of the previous books I mentioned. Characters actually get developed to the point where you care about them. The plot moves at a decent pace.

Farilane is the granddaughter of the emperor. She reads and writes which is illegal. She doesn't believe in magic and she is very smart. She travels the empire trying to piece together its history. Most of the old stories of magic she thinks are legends and then her world changes.

Tim Gerard Reynolds does another fantastic job presenting the material and he really is the voice of Michael J. Sullivan's books.

While this book sort of stands alone, it takes place centuries after the last book, I don't feel you would get the enjoyment out of it without the context of at least Nolan, which is too bad because Nolan isn't a great book, and probably the added context of the Legends of the First Empire series.

Absolutely loved it!

Amazing writer and narrator (TGR)!!! I've listened to all in the series so far (I think 18 now, some multiple times) and I don't know how they keep doing it! Brilliant imagination! I think this one hit above the limited 5-stars for me ... couldn't stop listening.

Emotionally Intense

Absolutely brilliant read. Very well crafted and truly wonderful, deep, delightful characters. An ending that leaves your emotions in tatters - but rightly so. I can say enough. It’s a wonderful gift to share such art with the world…..
