Publisher's Summary

Dragons. Elves. And the last surviving human fated to save them from the sea.

A flood is coming. The Sea Queen has a mad plan to drown the world.

Only the magic of the Earth Queen can stop her.

Vahly, the last human, was born to fill that role and wield the magic necessary to fight the rising oceans and save the dragons.

But Vahly is the world’s biggest disappointment. So far, she possesses no magic whatsoever.

When she finds an ancient scroll that mentions a human power ritual conducted deep in the homeland of the elves, she gathers her dragon allies, and journeys to see the king of that forest-dwelling race.

Welcomed into a place more lovely than any dream, will Vahly find the truth about her people’s past and wake her magic, or will a twisted and powerful elven lord destroy her chance at saving the world?

Great story, awesome narration!

Fully enjoyed this book, the story was great, exciting world, great tension and real feeing of urgency for Vahly. I was so into it I was actually disappointed when it ended. The narration was also fantastic, she did a great job with giving each character their own personality and voices, had great emotion where necessary and was very pleasant to listen to. I can’t wait to get the next book.

Slowly building world

3.5 stars. Starts out a bit slow, and the world didn’t really grab me. Once things got moving along, it was more interesting, but I feel like overall it is a big set up for the next book. There’s a lot of world building that needed to happen, so that probably bogged things down a bit. I wish I felt more of an attachment to the characters, but generally, I found them kind of interesting but not terrible deep or engrossing. A good story, with potential.

I received this audiobook free in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Awesome fantasy read

I liked the narration on this book, I thought the narrator did a great job keeping you engaged. I would definitely recommend this to any fantasy reader who like high fantasy rebellion and journey style books. Also dragons and sea people, I mean must I say more! Amazing

Can the last human save the world?

While it took me a while to get into the story, once I caught the adventure I had to keep listening. Enter a world of dragons, sea folk, elves and magic from the black water or earth blood, aka lava. The sea folk have flooded all the land except one remaining island after drowning every human.. Or so they thought. A dragon matriarch chose to rescue a little human girl keeping hope alive to bring back earth magic. Join the adventure as she tries to awaken her power.
The narrator does a good job bringing the characters to life.

A wonderful start to a new fantasy setting

The author of several previous fantasy series attempted to stretch her wings and move a little further into epic fantasy with this first book of a new series. Magic abounds, but so do the doubts and trails of life and existence. While the outcome seems certain, the deft touches of characterization and internal struggle abound without becoming too onerous or slowing the story.
Caitlin Davies, who I was familiar with from the Dragon Blood series by Lindasy Buroker and Talon Saga by Julie Kagawa, does another excellent job and shows a strong affinity for the worlds of fantasy.

Do yourself a favor and get in on the ground floor of this expanding series.

A solid 4 stars, looking forward to the next book.

I decided to go with the audible version of this book as I enjoyed Caitlin Davies narration. I was a little up and down with the story to start, which may have been a function of the "memory haze" but by the end I was bought in.

I liked the different angles that the author took and it was interesting to see the war, and the story, through different lenses. Like any good introductory book of a series we were left with many more questions than answers, looking forward to the next book in the series.

I listened to it at 1.25x speed which may have been slightly quicker than I liked, 1.15x speed probably would have been perfect.
