story was good, reader was awful
the reader dragged out words and made the women sound like "airheads". but the story itself doesn't... I think it's how he tries to voice them 😕

Great book, painful performance.
As someone in my 40s, I was thrilled to find a paranormal romance featuring characters closer to my age. It’s refreshing to finally relate to a main character in a genre that often feels geared toward much younger protagonists. The storyline itself is genuinely intriguing, and the characters are well-written with a realism that made me immediately invested. As a longtime fan of paranormal romance, the setup had everything I was looking for.
Unfortunately, I struggled hard with the audiobook narration. A male narrator was an odd choice for a romance story with strong female perspectives, and it really didn't work for me. In fact, if "steamy" was what they were going for, it had the opposite effect. His vocal performance included exaggerated macho voices for the male characters and overly affected, almost caricature-like voices for the women, which completely took me out of the story. Certain words were emphasized strangely, and the sibilance on his "s" sounds made it physically unpleasant to listen to for long stretches. The spicy scenes... I'll just be frank here, his narration grossed me out. I'm genuinely disappointed, because the book itself deserves better.
This will likely be a return for me, but I'm considering picking up the ebook version instead. The story is absolutely worth reading — I just can't enjoy it in this audio format.
