Compelling love story

I really enjoyed this book! A few highlights are that the lead female character was well rounded/ intelligent and strong. The sexual component between the main characters was also more appealing because it describes a strong emotional/intellectual connection coupled with sensual physicality. I love the fact that the author touches on insecurity that most women face about being good enough and slowly evolves the theme of self acceptance and self awareness.

What I didn’t appreciate was the way they highlighted two “black” character with backwards, uneducated speech. Although meant to be endearing…it is not the south in the 1950’s or 1800’s with mammy working as a maid or on a plantation. It takes place in Chicago in the 2000’s. the book and narrator does not need to perpetuate black, racist stereotypes with the inarticulate accent and blatant poor speech. As a person of colour I found it offensive.
