Story
For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Story
Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Publisher's Summary
Some dogs need a little help.
Some dogs are afraid, or excited, or reactive. Dogs that "don't listen" and "go crazy" don't live the lives we - or they - want.
Fired Up, Frantic, and Freaked Out can change that. Simple steps and an accessible, conversational tone from award-winning, internationally-known trainer Laura VanArendonk Baugh CPDT-KA KPACTP make calming the agitated dog not only possible, but pleasant.
In this book you'll learn how to achieve change in short, simple training sessions of a minute or less; maximize the effects of natural brain chemistry; know when to call in medical help; "clean up" unreliable behaviors in both overexcited sport dogs and pets at home; and recognize how fear, aggression, and excitement are variants of the same root problem.
The conversational tone is both informative and fun-very accessible, and it feels like the listener has a consulting trainer standing at her shoulder! Bring your dog from emotional to thoughtful, and enjoy a calmer, more enriched life with your best friend.

can a person be in love with a book? yes
An amazing read for dog owners and perspective dog owners of fearful, excited, aggressive or even just young dogs working through impulse control. this book was well written, well voice acted, comprehensive from the dog owners perspective without sounding condescending. I think a lot of amazing points about dog physiology are made here along with a detailed step by step instruction for a mat game a calming technique that has a broad range of applications if introduced correctly. I have trouble with focus but I listened to this to completion and I plan to revisit some of these chapters if needed. I've also recommended this to all my friends!!!!

THIS WORKS FOR REACTIVE DOGS
Have used this technique on an extremely people and dog reactive dog who had been in a shelter for over a year. Time is stretched thin in a shelter environment, so there was only about 4 days a week we were able to work on these short sessions of mat training. The dog picked up on it right away and within 2 months, she was non-reactive to dogs passing by, as close as through a window barrier. Now her only trigger with dogs is another reactive dog lunging toward her, understandably. Within 3 separate meetings of desensitizing her to new people, with her mat, she was able to be handled by this person who fell in love and offered to foster her and she left the shelter! Prior to her mat training, she was so reactive, most people were too uncomfortable to see her potential and wouldn't even come back for a second meeting. She now happily approaches many people and offers no lunging and barking when they look at her, approach her, reach for something, talk to her, etc. Baby bunnies and stray cats are the only things to trigger her lunging and barking these days. Amazing book for behaviorists/trainers!

Give it a try!
I’ve gotten lots of dog training books, most of which had very similar material and didn’t feel very relevant since my dog has anxiety issues. This book is very unique, and offers a training program that’s better suited for dogs with anxiety and aggression issues, and can still work for dogs with no issues at all. All positive training exercises means a happy doggo, so at the very least try it!

Bite a Lemon to Balance out the Sweetness
If overly saccharine narrators aren't your cup of tea, consider purchasing a print copy of this book. I found the information to be so valuable, I powered through the annoying "kindergarten teacher" narration to get to the end. To be fair, it's not like that all the way through. When the narrator is trying to "act out" conversations (real or parable driven), that's when it gets a bit cringe!
The subject matter is definitely worth a read, however, so buy the print or digital book version at a minimum.
