Taken from their families when they are very small and sent to a remote, church-run residential school, Kenny, Lucy, Clara, Howie and Maisie are barely out of childhood when they are finally released after years of detention.

Alone and without any skills, support or families, the teens find their way to the seedy and foreign world of Downtown Eastside Vancouver, where they cling together, striving to find a place of safety and belonging in a world that doesn’t want them. The paths of the five friends cross and crisscross over the decades as they struggle to overcome, or at least forget, the trauma they endured during their years at the Mission.

Fuelled by rage and furious with God, Clara finds her way into the dangerous, highly charged world of the American Indian Movement. Maisie internalizes her pain and continually places herself in dangerous situations. Famous for his daring escapes from the school, Kenny can’t stop running and moves restlessly from job to job—through fishing grounds, orchards and logging camps—trying to outrun his memories and his addiction. Lucy finds peace in motherhood and nurtures a secret compulsive disorder as she waits for Kenny to return to the life they once hoped to share together. After almost beating one of his tormentors to death, Howie serves time in prison, then tries once again to re-enter society and begin life anew.

With compassion and insight, Five Little Indians chronicles the desperate quest of these residential school survivors to come to terms with their past and, ultimately, find a way forward.

Absolutely beautiful.

I recommend this book to everyone willing to dig deeper into the ripples of the residential schools. The characters are enduring and their stories will tug at your heat strings.

Resiliency and Hope

ok this is a masterpiece
but the narrator with her halting, repetitive , indescribable irrationally placed emphasis in each sentence made it almost impossible to finish had it not been for Michelle's literary magnificence.

fantastic book. narrator was well, just awful

A heart-rending story of the impact of residential "schools". A very important story to expand understanding of the very devastating impact and also the amazing strengths of those who survived.

Only negative was that the narrator was a bit one note.

Consciousness raising

Beautifully well written story of trauma and healing. I was easily able to see these characters and their lives and experiences. It lifted a veil so I was able to experience and understand the devastating impact of residential schools through these 5 characters. And the ongoing apathy and racism towards indigenous peoples on turtle island.
I feel the story would have been so much better with a different narrator. Her voice was monotone and it sounded like she was reading the story for the first time. Still, I highly recommend this book...perhaps it would be better in print.

Truth and Healing

This is a very good audio book with interesting characters that come to life almost immediately. The story moves at a good pace and is well put together. I recommend it to
anyone. The only problem I had was that the narration mentioned the characters names a lot but this was good, in a sense, because I was able to keep them separated in my mind even if I put the book down for a while. I really enjoyed listening to this book and I am going to get others by the same author.

An Eye Opening Story

After seeing some negative reviews about the narrator, I started listening with some intrepidation. However, I quickly got used to her narration, and felt it was very appropriate for the content and nature of the book. Besides, she did the characters extremely well.
I am always looking to understand truth and reconciliation, and this was a poignant story that elucidated some very key elements.
I felt very drawn to all of the characters, including John Lennon and Billie Holiday.

A must read/listen

I really appreciated the individual and interwoven stories. I don’t gravitate to stories with happy endings but I really liked that the author closed the circle and ended with hope and a path to healing.

Excellent, heart wrenching
