Publisher's Summary

From William R. Forstchen, the New York Times bestselling author of the One Second After series, comes Five Years After, a near-future thriller where John Matherson must contend with new threats to the fragile civilization that he helped rebuild.

Five years after The Final Day, the Republic of New America has all but collapsed into regional powers and the world at large is struggling to remain stable as regional conflicts ravage the post EMP landscape. After several years attempting to lead a quiet life, John Matherson receives the news that the President is dying from a possible assassination attempt, and is asked to step in to negotiate with what appears to be a new military power hidden in the wreckage of the world.

Pulled back into the fray, John struggles to hold the tottering Republic together. Facing threats on multiple fronts, he races against time to stop another EMP attack on the former United States and China, putting years of progress at risk. With so much of his work under threat, John must find the strength within to start over, so that he can save the country and the people that he holds dear from even greater calamity.

What the critics say

“The future has never seemed more chilling or more believable than in Five Days After, a riveting dystopian page-turner from one of the masters of the genre. As you descend into the world that William Fortschen creates, you absolutely know that this is how it could all turn out. But as you root for the characters who inhabit his world, your faith in the human spirit will be restored.”—William Martin, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Constitution and December '41

“Forstchen is a rare storyteller who not only entertains, but also conveys a vital message. He reminds us how much we’ve forgotten—how to subsist, how to fight, and how to live. Five Years After is a veritable guidebook for surviving the apocalypse—and better yet, how to avoid it.”—Ward Larsen, winner of eight major awards and USA Today bestselling author of Deep Fake

“With One Second After, William Forstchen redefined and elevated the genre of apocalyptic fiction. Now, with the release of Five Years After he raises the bar once more. John Matherson faces his most diabolical antagonist yet, when he he's thrust into a deadly game of wits when a secret cabal of government survivors unleash global holocaust. To save the world, John must embrace the unthinkable, and live with the consequences forever. This is edge-of-the-seat fiction at its finest!”—Kathleen O'Neal-Gear and W. Michael Gear, award-winning, New York Times bestselling authors of The People of the Earth series and Dissolution

Got tired of it?

After loving the other books and waiting for this one I was extremely disappointed when the author seemingly got tired of making his way towards an actual ending and just nuked the story. Metaphorically and literally. I feel sad and empty. I guess I’ll go play some Fallout 4.

Huge disappointment 😡

Compared to the other books in the series, this one seemed like it was pasted together as just another title in the series to make some money.

Story was somewhat predictable, but worst of all:
This narration just grates on your nerves …. ‘Johhhhhhhhhhnnnnnn’

Hard to believe this is the same author

The "after" saga is one of my best series of all time. The historical Background is perfect and the story is very realistic in the previous novels. But this one, while retaining the historical aspect, falls short on everything else. The start is a slow burner and it's not getting much better later. The voice acting is not helping. It's too much and denatured the characters. Makela is suddenly a fragile and very emotional person just because of the overacting performance. And let's not talk about the ending closing a whole story with such an easy solution developed in 2 pages is very frustrating. It's very painful for me to rate this so low.

Sorta disappointed

I truly loved the first 2 books. The 3rd was ok. This one left me wondering how a series can nose dive like this. I don't think I'd continue with this series if another book comes out. The idea that this book was written for was there and potentially good. But it landed far short in my eyes.

Good read

Not as good as the previous ones in the series but still a good read. Bronson Pinchot’s performance was great as usual.

Very disappointing after the earlier books.

Seems the author got tired and wanted to kill the series. After such good work in the earlier books this one does not hold up.

Such a disappointment after the first books in the series. Jumps the shark with a bomb.

Blah Blah Blah ... Boom!

Considering how excellent the first books were, this is such a disappointment! It's so poorly put together that it hardly makes sense. John had been so well drawn before, but now is almost unrecognizable. And the storyline! It is just plain nonsense!
Taking the story out of our hero's college town and making it global was a terrible mistake. All the interesting cast of characters of the previous books are gone, to be replaced by buffoons or saints or interchangeable support staff. But saddest of all, the narration of the usually reliable Bronson Pinchot is terrible. His John is so soft spoken, he hardly registers. And his bad guy general is execrable... unlistenable ... a caricature of a movie military heavy. If I had to hear him say "Joohhhnnnn" one more time, I would have lost it. I had to keep adjusting the volume during their conversations to boost the sound for the former and tone down the latter ... very distracting! So save your credit or your money with this one ... it is not worth it.

Disappointed. Is this a John Matherson novel?

Oh, JM is in the story, but no idea what the author was planning. Maybe a draft? Way too convoluted, and unrealistic storyline. Constant rehashing of dialog between characters, missing explanations and reasoning for power dynamics. The main protagonists are unrecognizable, while the antagonists (there are a couple) seem the be too robotic. It is almost like a different person wrote this story. The ending was rushed and left me feeling like WTF?
