Story
Minalan the Spellmonger has a problem: Mycin Amana, the undead consort of Korbal the Necromancer, is not only occupying one of the largest castles in the kingdom; she’s also occupying the recently-dead body of his former lover, rapist, and mother of his children, Isily of Greenflower. As the crises in the heart of the kingdom grows, Minalan is tasked to force the so-called Witch Queen of Darkfaller from her new stronghold using any means necessary. Unfortunately, the castle belongs to his rival in the royal court and future monarch Prince Tavard, whose ideas are doomed to failure.

It is said by some that the Spellmonger’s exile to the Magelaw left Sevendor, the City of Magic, unprotected in his absence. That would be untrue, for though the mightiest mage of the era was forced by law and custom to refrain from visiting his realm in Castal, he left behind a significant body of learned and dedicated colleagues to continue his policies and see to the protection of the magelands. These were not all warmagi, nor even High Magi; indeed, the strength of Sevendor depended on magi of all types and descriptions.

Story
When Minalan the Spellmonger was exiled from his beloved mageland of Sevendor by Prince Tavard, his friend Duke Anguin made him Count Palatine of the Magelaw, a vast realm in the Alshari Wilderlands that Minalan is all too familiar with. After the goblin invasion, the province is devastated, ruined, and peopled almost only by freed slaves. But Minalan has brought his recovering wife and family into exile with him, and he views their impoverished fief as an opportunity to build a new City of Magi in the wilderness.

What does the most powerful wizard in the world do after the war? Despite the hordes of goblins still ready to ravage human lands, King Rard has signed a treaty with them, so Minalan is forbidden from taking advantage of their weak state. Most would take a well-deserved rest over the summer…but Minalan and his household are busy repaying a favor owed to the tribal Kasari for their help in the war, and the Spellmonger pays his debts. So Minalan spends his summer sneaking 2,000 Kasari children through enemy lines and some of the roughest territory in the Five Duchies toward salvation.

Minalan gets medieval! When you defeat the invading goblin army, get knighted on the field of battle, gifted with lands and gold, usually your happily-ever-after is...happy. But now that Minalan the Spellmonger has been ennobled and enfiefed, Sire Minalan has a task cut out for him that makes defeating goblins seem like child’s play: Moving his very pregnant bride and a few thousand refugees from Boval Vale into the remote, sparsely peopled Domain of Sevendor. Publisher's Summary
The Spellmonger series continues with a search for answers in The Lost Land of Anghysbel....
After winning two wars against the Nemovorti, Minalan plans an expedition to The Lost Valley of Anghysbel, in the far north of his realm. It's there, in the caldera of a supervolcano at the edge of the tundra, he suspects many of the answers he so desperately needs might be hidden. The only problem is that thanks to the anti-magical properties of the jevolar, his spells won’t work; he’ll be without magic for the first time since he came into his Talent. On this quest for the knowledge to save the world, the stakes are too high to be concerned about such things. Minalan seeks the knowledge he needs, no matter the price.
The Footwizard, Fondaras the Wise, has been to the realm of the jevolar four times in his long life. He knows the way, and he knows the great dangers of the non-magical land. He warns that Anghysbel is filled with forgotten creatures and lost races that have hidden from the world for eons. That doesn’t dissuade the Spellmonger—it’s a challenge. But once he’s there, Minalan’s expedition discovers a unique land filled with forgotten secrets.
Dark powers more ancient than the world dwell in exotic Anghysbel, powers that would speed Callidore’s destruction, not work for its salvation. Minalan the Spellmonger has to consider carefully if he’s willing to pay the price to save the world...and the cost of that bargain may well be his life.

Love the series, Not warm and fuzzy with the scope creep. This one dangerously dwells into the non magical realm. There's a reason this is called Spell Monger. Leave star trek in space.

The beginning was a slow start as most of Terry's books but the final 1/3 was incredible! So many pieces were put together in the grand scheme and the richness of culture being made and being "remembered" was amazing! If you are 12 books deep into a series you hardly need a full review to convivence you to listen to the 13th. I will simply say that this is the best in the series thus far. Terry Mancour continues to deliver with the adventures of Minalan and Callidore. John Lee delivers another excellent performance and we even get, in a very serious manner "Rick Rolled". It was amazing.

This book needed editing.
I'm a huge fan. Read and reread the books several times. This is the worst book of the series. I almost couldn't get through it. I'm always up for a new Spellmonger book, but not if this is what's coming. We are forced to read Footwizard to stay up with the story, but one more like this and idk. Pace is horrible. The narrative is such that I assume he is getting paid by the word. There are answers but no growth, Our favorite characters on the page, soulless shells, not interacting with each other, undefined and doing one-liners and rickrolls. My advice - listen to it while you are doing something useful so it's not a complete waste of time.
John Lee was amazing as always!

The writing is excellent!!!!
This story consumes you ...once u start, there is no stopping until you're done. It takes over your life.
Terry Mancour is a master ...his name deserves to be recognized on the same level as Tolkien or Martin. As a series Spellmonger is potent. Pound for pound I can't think of any other series that hits you this hard.
John Lee slays ...the books are great on their own, but he actually makes them even better.
What a joy this has been. I can't wait for the next book in the series, also I hope this gets picked up as a movie series or tv series. My imagination allows me to thoroughly enjoy the story, but I wud still love to see this world brought to life in a visual format.

Very good change of pace from the typical pacing. I like the sci-fi elements of this series. I will say there are wayyyy too many references to pop culture, musicians, and movies. This isn’t family guy, don’t overdo it.
