Publisher's Summary

This program is read by the author.

A nonfiction investigation into masculinity, For the Love of Men provides actionable steps for how to be a man in the modern world, while also exploring how being a man in the world has evolved.

In 2019, traditional masculinity is both rewarded and sanctioned. Men grow up being told that boys don’t cry and dolls are for girls (a newer phenomenon than you might realize - gendered toys came back in vogue as recently as the '80s). They learn they must hide their feelings and anxieties, that their masculinity must constantly be proven. They must be the breadwinners, they must be the romantic pursuers. This hasn’t been good for the culture at large: 99 percent of school shooters are male; men in fraternities are 300 percent (!) more likely to commit rape; a woman serving in uniform has a higher likelihood of being assaulted by a fellow soldier than to be killed by enemy fire.

In For the Love of Men, Liz offers a smart, insightful, and deeply researched guide for what we're all going to do about toxic masculinity. For both women looking to guide the men in their lives and men who want to do better and just don’t know how, For the Love of Men will lead the conversation on men's issues in a society where so much is changing, but gender roles have remained strangely stagnant.

What are we going to do about men? Liz Plank has the answer. And it has the possibility to change the world for men and women alike.

Insightful and empathetic

I bought this book thinking about my brother and other men in my life who are affected by the pressures of toxic masculinity. It really opened my eyes to the struggles men actively face, and I am working on being softer and more empathetic to the men in my life. Liz walks us through this lesson of empathy with a performance that makes me feel like I am with a buddy.

This was excellent

This text is so dense yet entertaining. It’s packed full of information and stats. Plank does a great job of capturing so much nuance and a broad scope of connected issues and intersections with masculinity, making it my go-to text about the topic. Lots of interviews, lots of research, and incredibly poignant. Please read this, whoever you are.

Life changing, the end.

As a male who is just beginning to grapple with the ideas of toxic masculinity and what modern, thoughtful and true masculine looks like to me, this is a life changer. The lessons and thought-provoking questions in this book I will carry with me for the rest of my life, not exaggerating.
This is a must-read for anyone who struggles with the social gender construct and how it has affected us and ingrained itself into our lives.
Liz Plank did the work on this one, and only asks one thing in return, that we do the work in ourselves.

Extraordinarily eye opening

I am a man, and this is one of the most thought-provoking and eye-opening books I have ever read. It expect it to positively impact my self image, marriage and parenting, in measurable ways.
The author approaches masculinity from a place of understanding and compassion that is completely disarming and so refreshing.
Thank you for opening my eyes to the idea that true freedom for men and women are inseparable, and that compassion is the key.
I highly recommend it. Anyone looking to explore this topic deeper should check out the ’Man Enough’ Podcast.

Thank you Liz

So many times through out listening to Liz’s research and conclusions, I thought of the men and women in my life who should read this book. Most of all, I thought of my dad and all of the questions I want to ask him about his life and choices and ways of navigating through this world. For the past month, I have found myself inserting Liz Plank’s ideas and conclusions into every conversation possible. She describes the ubiquitous masculinity and partial gender revolution that affects us all in a personable and refreshing way. I loved the personal tone of this book and the way she brought her perspective to such a nuanced and complex discussion.
