À propos de cet audio

First contact gone wrong. Humanity judged and found wanting. Unlimited power up for grab.

The Galactic Consensus arrived on ships as large as skyscrapers, crafted from glittering alloys that no human scientist could even begin to understand. They followed the trail of century-old television transmissions to welcome us into the galactic community...only to recoil in horror at what they found.

They concluded that humans were unfit to be trusted with the advanced technologies that member-states of the Consensus freely traded with each other, installing a relay to warn other ships that we were under embargo, but more importantly, allowing humans entrance into the Tower of Somnus, a multiplayer game of sorts that could be played in one’s sleep. The hope was that humanity would learn proper behavior from playing the game with our more civilized neighbors.

Katherine "Kat" Debs, a hereditary employee of one of the megacorporations that ruled the world, eked out a meager existence in a massive arcology of glittering glass and chrome. She dreamt of one day earning enough money to buy her freedom and was more than willing to break a law here or there in the process. When she is offered an opportunity to enter the Tower of Somnus free of corporate control, she jumps at the chance. After all, the "game" was more than just a status symbol; players retained the fantastic powers they earned in the game in the waking world as well.

A perfect opportunity to take control of her destiny or die trying.

Roughly 50% of this Cale Plamann book takes place on a dystopian Earth where corporations rule society - keeping average people + families effectively as slaves - and Cyberpunk underworld criminals skirt the authorities to traffic in illegal data. Meanwhile, an intergalactic RPG known as "The Tower Of Somnus" offers the chance to develop magic & skills that can be used IRL (with humans a relatively new species provisionally allowed to participate to hopefully evolve into something worthy of inclusion in "The Galactic Concensus".. but generally using the oportunity to empower "Street Samurai" on Earth/or for personal gain). The author's imagination is praiseworthy.
An overpowered and almost cartoonishly admirable/empathetic high-schooler named 'Katherine "Kat" Debs' finds her way into the game and develops powers + skills while teamed with a party including a four-armed lizard person & a giant sentient otter - fighting a variety of monsters in-game and almost single-handedly redeeming our species (back home, she fights in a gangwar between rival Underworld Cartels).
The magic system and game mechanics lack anything innovative - and the combat is vicious but pretty straightforward - but Plamann's focus is clearly on plot, anyway. I enjoyed his conception but found that the almost YA sentiments - contrasted with R-rated blood-soaked gore and generous F-bombs - threw me a little bit. The incongruity is intriguing but left me wondering what is the author's target demographic: tweens or adults?

As to presentation: this audiobook sounds like a full-cast performance. Andrea Parsneau is an impressive voice actress. Distinctive accented characters pepper the tale.. and even her shrill interpretations aren't tympanic membrane-threatening. Parsneau tends to rush through action sequences, but her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are furthermore commendable. If you are given the option between a text version of the book or this recorded iteration, choose this one every time.

Altogether, 'Tower Of Somnus: Foundations' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. I conclude that it's relatively boilerplate GameLit that belongs in the 'Plus' catalog.
It was a reasonable distraction for free, but not worth a Credit with other options available (YA or LitRPG).

[Incidentally: I know that I'm an old-timer (54), but I can't be the only one that struggles with "They/Them" pronouns for individuals, am I? It just sounds awkward to me]

An Odd Mix Of Juvenile & Violent

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the narration. It’s easy to read, and takes interesting twist syndrome throughout the story. Parts were predictable other parts weren’t, so that made this literary piece entertaining.

I enjoyed it to listen to it twice in a row and I’m sure I’ll listen to it again.

This is my first novel that I read by Cale Plamann it was excellent. I look forward to finishing the series and looking at his two other series.

Interesting take of adding an RPG experience and weaving it a literary experience.

this book was amazing. of all the fantasy I have ever read this one probably has the evilest version of future humanity I have ever seen. A soulless corporate apocalypse taken to its logical extreme. yet even coming from a vile hopless pit people are still people. I can't wait for the next one.

wow just wow

The story is fine. I liked the dystopic corporate setting. Maybe it was too much, but it's the author's world. Still, there was very few descriptions. I don't know what the environment looks like. Only some characters and creatures have basic descriptions.

Then there's the naration. Andrea Parsneau have nice voice and is talented. However I did forget how annoying it can be when she uses agressive voices. All her "noble" characters always have the same strange accent and the way she reads characters sheets is so annoying! At least there were no "ding" in this book and the skills list is short. Please keep to your own voice or at least don't force so much tone of voice changes. It is not necessary.

It was ok

After buying book 1 in a sale, I saw there's a book 1 to 3 omnibus version n on Audible! Clearly that was my next credit without hesitation. Go dl it now! Outstanding narration, and fun world creation for some light, action packed RPG lit.
