Publisher's Summary

Originally published in the 16th century, this is the classic history of the lives, sufferings, and deaths of the early Christian martyrs. As interesting as fiction, it is written with both passion and tenderness, telling the dramatic story of some of the most thrilling periods in Christian history. Foxe brings to life the days when "a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid, climbed the steep ascent of heaven, amid peril, toil, and pain."

After The Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our time it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification.

Powerful

It was well narrated, enjoyable to listen to.
I've read this story years ago, in this shorter form. I like this format better then what I've learned of the full, extended version, because while it does not omit the names, dates and harsh event, that make up the history, of the martyrdom of the Christian, it doesn't delve to deeply in the horrible crimes committed against them. It's enough to know these things happened, without seeing these diabolical act in their entirety. When I read it 10- 15 years ago, it was as a student of history, curious to learn what I'd heard so much about. But considering the current state of the world, I look at it as a warning, and explaination of the coming future.
Those who do not learn from the past, will be forced to repeat it. A must read,( or listen) for any who dare call themselves, "Christian".

History, this book 2nd most read book after KJV.

Modern readers are missing out by not knowing this history. In the 16th to 18th century Foxes Book of Martyrs was on every bookshelf and was the second most read book after the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress.
