Publisher's Summary

Book 3 in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

On the shattered world of Verghast, Gaunt and his Ghosts find themselves embroiled within an ancient and deadly civil war as a mighty hive-city is besieged by an unrelenting foe.

Listen to it because: The return of a classic Gaunt's Ghosts novel! The Tanith First deploy to Verghast to help break the Chaos siege of Vervunhive. Tanks clash with daemon engines, Imperial Guardsmen make brave last stands and Colonel-Commissar Gaunt steps up and takes control of the war effort, showing for the first time the command abilities that will go on to make him a legend.

The story: On the world of Verghast, a grinding war between two hive cities - one loyal to the Imperium, the other fallen to the worship of the Dark Gods - is bolstered by the forces of the Astra Militarum, spearheaded by the Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only. But bitter rivalries and treachery threaten to derail the defence of Vervunhive, and it falls to Gaunt to take command of the Imperial forces and forge victory from an almost certain defeat.

Best yet.

Gaunt is at his best when he is pointing out and exposing the facisim of his own military yet still staying loyal to the Imperium. certainly the best battles yet and an influx of new characters are brought in. Fantastic.

Invest in this Series. It's so worth it!

I'm 3 books in and I want to hear them all. Dan Abnett writes some of the best 40k you can get.

Gripping Gaunts Ghosts Tale

Dan Abnett gives us more of the same, which is a good thing. Story is solid and engaging, Toby Longworth has a bit more range of accent to work with and excels as always. If I had a complaint it would be that the build is better than the payoff, it felt a little rushed at the end and somewhat anticlimactic. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Absolutely Outstanding!

Another wonderful piece from Dan Abnett!

Toby Longworth did a wonderful job portraying the Tannith and all the other characters in the book! I have to say, this was worth all my time invested in it!

Gaunt gets to Fight Back - Finally!

Excellent sense of tension and release throughout the first and second acts. So good in fact that you feel like you need a cigarette when an antagonist finally receives their comeuppance. Third act leaned on cinematic bombast, but lacked tension because the final obstacle appeared so late into the story that it didn't get the attention it deserved, devolving into a 'big bad guy' appearing from out of nowhere. The author does a good job of introducing many characters and is fully prepared to kill any and all of them in brutally quick, or miserably slow ways. It's never 100% assured that your favorites will make it out alive. Alas, with the audio format, some character names can sound very similar and it makes it difficult to determine who has survived and who hasn't. The narrator does a good job of making character's distinct by implementing different accents and tonal changes to define who is speaking. Every so often there is a stumble and an affect is lost or they respond as the wrong character. Given the mass of characters, this can make some scenes confusing.

Perfect entry to the series

Beautifully written and equally masterfully voiced. Dan's craft in this one is evident, many layers of story telling, but without losing focus and Toby's vocals are perfect in tone and variance.

One of my favourites brought to life!

Necropolis is one of my favourite Dan Abnett novels, and he's one of my favourite sci-fi authors. I was super excited to see it made into an audiobook, and Toby Longworth's presentation is top notch! I will definitely listen to this many more times, and heartily recommend it for anyone who is a fan of 40K, the Imperial Guard, or even if you're new to the Warhammer universe as a great sci-fi war novel with characters you will fall in love with! Can't say enough good things about this audiobook! Five stars is not enough!
