Publisher's Summary

New York Times best seller

You can choose hope in the midst of chaos.

The visionary behind the million-strong IF:Gathering challenges you to exercise your God-given power to shift negative thinking patterns and take back control of your thoughts and emotions.

"A must-have resource for anyone looking to get control of their thoughts." (Lysa TerKeurst, number one New York Times best-selling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries)

Christian Book Award finalist

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by Cosmopolitan

Are your thoughts holding you captive? I’ll never be good enough. Other people have better lives than I do. God couldn’t really love me. Jennie Allen knows what it’s like to swirl in a spiral of destructive thoughts, but she also knows we don’t have to stay stuck in toxic thinking patterns.

As she discovered in her own life, God built a way for us to escape that downward spiral. Freedom comes when we refuse to be victims to our thoughts and realize we have already been equipped with power from God to fight and win the war for our minds.

In Get Out of Your Head, Jennie inspires and equips us to transform our emotions, our outlook, and even our circumstances by taking control of our thoughts. Our enemy is determined to get in our heads to make us feel helpless, overwhelmed, and incapable of making a difference for the kingdom of God. But when we submit our minds to Christ, the promises and goodness of God flood our lives in remarkable ways.

It starts in your head. And from there, the possibilities are endless.

Wasn’t clear that it would so religious

I understand that a higher power is useful when one is searching for self improvement so I was expecting some religion to be cited through the book. However, it was the main focus. I couldn’t get through chapter one because I felt like I was reading the bible. Nothing wrong with that either but it is not advertised that way, or at least it is not honest about how much of this advice relies on God.

Anyways, no biggie but it’s not for me. Thought I’d send a review in case anyone else wanted to know

Not what I was looking for

Too gospel for my blood. It just isn't for me. I was hoping for it to be more of a psychosocial approach.

Just what I needed in my time of need! I have a Choice!

One of the most powerful lines I have a choice has impacted me so much. I am an Early Childhood Educator and I teach a class of 20 little 3 year olds. We are constantly telling them that they have 2 choices. And teaching them how to manage their emotions through the Zones of Regulation. I have been teaching these things for about 8 years but it was not till this year and hearing this book that I actually realized that all I had been teaching them that I could apply to my own thought life. I have a choice too! I could choose to get angry at their behaviour or i could choose to coach them through their struggles! This book has made such a difference I can’t express my thanks enough to God for you being blessed with the gift of the task to right His truths! Love and Blessings!

God is not the answer.

The fact that it starts with God and how religion is the answer, means this book is useless. Dont bother.

Great for some

I’m sure it’s a great book, as someone who isn’t religious I found this really to be a lot for me- maybe I need to read the book description better but this was not what I had been anticipated.

So helpful!!

If you’re looking for the reason your joy is so fleeting, read this book, and further yet, do the study! Life changing material, pointing people towards Truth and giving them practical steps they can take towards mental freedom. I love the strong tie between science backing up faith in Jesus.

Too Religious

Sooooooo religious. I wish I had read more of the bad reviews before purchasing because the amount of religion in this is just too much. I can't pay attention.

I didn’t realize it was so scripture based, it was ok. I’m a believer but too much for me, needed a little more unfiltered

I Have A Choice

I have a choice! Yes, I do and so do you. I DO NOT have to believe the anxious, negative thoughts that the enemy uses as his weapons. The thoughts he uses to distract me from the purpose I was made for. Jennie Allen contends that the biggest battle this generation has is being fought right now, right between our ears. The one being fought daily in our own minds. The one where the enemy is using our own thoughts to continue the negative, toxic spiral to distract us from living out the purpose God has for our lives.

Honestly, I knew I needed this book, as soon as I saw the title. I've read books and studies written by Jennie before, her writing is accessible and easy to read. I figured I'd start reading and not be able to put the book down, as I've experienced with other books written by her. Boy, that was not the case for me! I struggled to read this book. I mean I truly struggled! I read the ARC I received in exchange for my honest opinion. It took me much longer to read than reading a book of this length normally would, because I just had to stop reading so frequently.

Almost every page hit me hard! I'd read a page or two and have to stop, not because the writing was awful or "un-readable". No, I had to put the book down because . EVERY . SINGLE . WORD . CONVICTED . ME! They slew me! It was as though God was speaking directly into my heart and mind through each word and I just could not handle hearing these truths spoken to me so clearly and directly!

I had pre-ordered the Audio version, which released the same day I am writing this review. I was so struck by all the truths hitting me, I just had to re-read the audio version today, before I could write this review. Again, I was convicted by every word spoken.

I have struggled my whole life with anxiety and depression. I'm the kind of person that is "in my head" a lot if you know what I mean. Anyway, until reading and re-reading this book, I just didn't realize just how powerful my thought life is. Jennie shares scriptures which backed up by science are irrefutable proof that we don't have to be the victim of our toxic thoughts. We have the ability to fight and change these grooves in our brains. She gives instructions on how to apply these scriptures to our own battlefronts to help us win this battle.

This is one of those self-help books I'll be reaching for again and again. I know without a doubt that I will return to these instructions to help me continue to fight this battle going on in my mind. I understand there is a Bible study to go along with this book, coming out in March. I'll be pre-ordering this for sure, in the hopes of continuing to apply the concepts I've learned in this book.

I received this book free from the author through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Speaking truth in love

The narrator was Jennie herself and she did a fabulous job bringing her book to life with her hint of southern drawl and emotional inflections.

The material was well balanced between spiritual and mental, careful not to neglect how complicated and hard to navigate the inner world can be. As a person who walks the line with a real anxiety diagnosis, I did not feel less or dismissed by this author as I often do in the Christian church. She used science and the Bible together, and showed how choosing one to combat mental illnesses or struggles does not mean dismissing the other, but instead showcases how truly compatable they are. It was refreshing to see her delve into psychological issues without fear of science, but saw science as another gift that God uses to teach and instruct us.

I recommend this book especially to women who feel a harsh inner critic sits on their shoulder. It was more then a self help book, it was a fellow Christian sister speaking the truth in love.

This book is just what I needed to focus my thoughts on God

I knew I would love this book after attending one of Jeannie Allen’s conferences in Tampa. I really appreciate her honesty as she discusses some hard topics, and how we all can get side tracked with spiraling negative thoughts that make us sad and unproductive. She gives you a way to stop the negative thinking! As a nurse, I love that she’s shares her studies of the brain and how our thought processes work! Highly recommend for anyone looking to think more positively, and set and keep their gaze on Jesus Christ.

Simultaneously Convicting and Hopeful

As a long-time Jennie Allen fan, I have a few of her other books on Audible- but this one?! THIS ONE IS NARRATED BY JENNIE HERSELF! It’s like she’s speaking to us all one-on-one, which is so important considering the topic. This book confronts our thoughts and habits of cynicism, complacency, anxiety, etc., but instead of just calling us out on our stuff- Jennie gives hope. She gives practical tools to fight the enemy. And most of all, she points us to the Word of God. 10/10 recommending to all of my friends.
